Rupp’s squad faces Redhawks

Tech will be trying to halt a two-game losing streak against the Redhawks (3-3), a member of the Ohio Valley.
Both of those defeats came against Arkansas-based clubs and on the road. The ‘Dogs were stopped 67-54 by the University of Arkansas-Pine Bluff before losing the University of Arkansas-Little Rock 63-49.
An early 7-0 run by the Trojans made it a catch-up situation for Tech, who trailed 28-14 at halftime and could not come any closer than nine points during the final half.

Lift a spirit this season

It’s enough to make some people downright sad. While many of Lincoln Parish’s residents turn their thoughts to family, friends and holiday cheer, people without those blessings, who may face particular financial or personal hardship for any number of reasons, are likely feeling the holiday blues.
At one point or another, it is likely each of us will feel the holidays crush our spirits.
Children grow up, families become separated and money — as all of us know — comes and goes.
But dwelling on it is exactly what will make depression all the more severe.

Jail's best options are murky

The stories I’ve written on the situation haven’t shed as much light as I’d like, partly because the parish faces some confusing options and no clear “best” option.
LaSalle Management is still running the show, and Stone, head of the LPDC Commission, is crunching numbers and compiling the parish’s options for a presentation he hopes to make later this week.
None of the options really appeal to him, and I sympathize.
Do we expand the facility ourselves? Do we privatize the facility, through the current management team or otherwise?

Crews to drain derailed tanks

Dennis said three tank cars have been moved from the derailment site and are being thoroughly inspected before they are sent back on track to their destination.
None of the hazardous material spilled or leaked from the derailed cars, but officials have closed the area to residents and traffic as a precaution.
If all goes well today, Dennis said crews will transfer the butadiene from the two derailed tankers into other train tank cars this afternoon.
“That’s the quickest way to get the product out of the area and on the way it its destination,” he said.

’Dogs hope to finish on good note

Later in the day, league champion Hawaii (11-0) will shut down its regular season with a home game against Washington.
Should the Warriors win, they’ll likely earn an invitation to a BCS bowl.
A victory by Hawaii combined with a Tech triumph would then put the Ruston ‘Dogs in a postseason scenario, the likely destination being the Sheraton Hawaii Bowl or the New Mexico Bowl during the latter part of December.

Bike project is a gift for all involved

The DWCC Lifers Association will spruce up the donated bikes, then give them to the Boys and Girls Club so local children can enjoy them. It’s one of many charitable causes the association has undertaken.
Fisher-Giorlando explained that the prisoners do this work because they hope to keep kids from going down the wrong path.

Literacy changed my life

My family and I are stronger because of this program, and I know in my heart I will succeed in the career I have chosen. The teachers have helped me so much. I would never have been able to pass my test without them. They are an inspiration to all of us. The Family Literacy program has changed my life by helping me further my education, helping me understand my family and giving us a better future. I am very grateful that I had the opportunity to attend the Lincoln Parish Even Start Family Literacy program.

Derailed train closes U.S. 80

The Red Cross has set up shelters for evacuated families at Choudrant’s Family Life Center and at First Baptist Church in Calhoun, Sanderson said.
Stone estimated it will take at least 48 hours to clear the tracks and the roadway, and he said evacuated residents will not be allowed to return to their homes until the area is cleared and secured.

Cougars enjoyed super season

There are plenty of others, too, some of them getting their first experience at the varsity prep level such as linebacker Christian Marcus, tight end John Foster Chestnut and placekicker Robert Feron.

Avoiding bumps in the road

A chunk of both the City Council and Police Jury’s time has been spent considering road overlay and expansion projects, and the results are taking shape around us — albeit slowly.
The inconvenience of traveling to Wal-Mart caused by the I-20 service road project has at least partially abated with the opening of the west entrance to the store earlier this year.
Also, a new connector now opens a path from the area behind Wal-Mart out to La. 33.
