Parade is bed of roses

“He had an outstanding setup,” Pannell said. “They gave him a whole mile to put all his characters in. After we got everything worked out, he flew us out there and put us up in Universal City.”
The band remained there for seven days, getting up around 6:30 a.m. to head to Pasadena Community College to practice for the 6.2 mile parade, which featured the danceline in special costumes and a platoon of 501 Troopers.
“We lived like kings and queens out there,” Pannell said. “It was such a joy, really enjoyable.”

Bulldogs face No. 13 Nevada

Make that top 15 nationally ranked Nevada, the most talented team to face the ‘Dogs on the TAC court this season and one of the best to ever come into Tech’s backyard.
The Wolf Pack (19-2, 7-1) currently share first place with the same New Mexico State squad that the ‘Dogs stunned 73-71 the other night, have captured wins in 12 of their last 13 games and are picked to win another Western Athletic Conference championship and reach the NCAA’s Big Dance.

Protect your home from heating fires

It is important to follow safety guidelines to help prevent blazes from igniting, possibly causing damage or death.
The NFPA offers the following guidelines when attempting to warm a home:
• When buying a new space heater, make sure it carries the mark of an independent testing laboratory and is legal for use in your community.
• Install your stationary (fixed) space heater according to manufacturer’s instructions or applicable codes or better yet, have it installed by a professional.

Public court issues swift ruling

Proof of this can be seen with the recent confirmation that the Lincoln Parish Sheriff’s Office is investigating alleged misconduct by a parish teacher. That sentence pretty much sums up what the LPSO has released about the allegations. When I spoke to Sheriff Mike Stone, he said the department was withholding information, including the teacher’s name, until the allegations could be investigated. At that point, the report was still relatively new. We agreed that whether proved true or false, the accusations would likely follow the teacher for the remainder of his life.

Misconduct investigation continues

“All we have at this time is an allegation,” Harris said. “No one has been arrested, and there is a lot of investigation left to do before we can determine what we need to do.”
Harris said it would probably be several days before more specific information is available.
“We really won’t have much to say until the investigation is complete,” Harris said.
According to other news sources, the allegations were made against Simsboro High School teacher Philip Cardwell.
Lincoln Parish Schools Superintendent Danny Bell said Cardwell tendered a letter of resignation Friday.

Turnaround for Lady Techsters?

Tech dismissed a long (over 14 hours) and discombobulated trek to Moscow, Idaho recently to throttle the Lady Vandals 87-68.
Then, at the Thomas Assembly Center this past Saturday night, the Techsters slammed Fresno State 78-40.
It was two solid, impressive wins for a team that’s been tougher to figure out at times this season than the NFL’s formula for rating passers.

La. Tech deserves applause

Getting the certification means that students who train on the equipment can save as much as $7,000.
One of the key factors besides the lower cost is the gold star that sits upon Tech’s aviation department for recruitment. Tech is one of only two universities which have a simulator like this. The other is Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University.

Work to fight cancer at home

In my several conversations with Christina Griffin, community representative for the American Cancer society, one statement seems to come up in every conversation: “Everyone has been touched by cancer.”
There’s a good reason why this statement is repeated. How many other debilitating diseases do we know of where every person has a connection to it?
For cancer, either you know or have known someone diagnosed or you have been a victim yourself. I don’t know of one person who falsifies this statement, but if you break the mold, let me know.

ULS approves endowed chair

Wiley Hiburn, head of Louisiana Tech’s Journalism Department and chief of the school’s News Bureau, said Barnes was a personal friend.
“He might have been the most shrewd business man I’ve ever known,” Hilburn said. “He sold groceries when the big chains were running everyone else out of business.”
Hilburn said Barnes never let his success go to his head.
“We’d give him honors at Tech and he would just laugh about it,” Hilburn said. “He was so much fun and had a great sense of humor.”

’Dogs gearing up for signing day

But with the NCAA’s national signing day now less than a month away, Dooley and his staff are making strong inroads on the recruiting trail.
As of today, there’s a total of 11 verbal commitments from high school players and another two have signed out of the junior college ranks.
According to the Scout.com web site, an estimated 50 prep players have listed Tech as one of their possible considerations to continue their playing careers.
