Malone: Missing the game?

But returning to the game in another role?
All options are seemingly open after Malone was invited by the Utah Jazz to evaluate players for the franchise this past weekend in a pre-draft workout held at the team’s practice facility.
He assisted team staff members in analyzing the skills of late June draft prospects Shelden Williams of Duke, Hilton Armstrong of Connecticut, Mouhamed Saer Sene of Senegal and Patrick O’Bryant of Bradley.
He enjoyed the experience and indicated that he wouldn’t discount getting back into the game in some capacity.

Be aware of heat risks this summer

The elderly, in particular, are more susceptible to heat-related illnesses, such as heat stroke and exhaustion.
Area agencies regularly hold fan drives to help address this need. We encourage community members to contribute to these drives and to organizations that help in this area.
Humanitarian Enterprises of Lincoln Parish (H.E.L.P.) is accepting applications now for distribution of fans, with first priority given to people without central air or with insufficient cooling devices.
Such an effort is to be commended and supported.

Relax, relate release stress

I like to think of myself as a pretty laid-back, even-keeled person, but there are things that trigger a panic mode, no problem.
One of those things is driving. Sometimes I have to recognize the budding signs of road rage: white knuckles firmly clutching the steering wheel, eyes squinted into a furious glare at the driver who committed the transgression and PG-13 rated whispers escaping in bursts from clenched lips.
It’s at this moment that it helps to remind myself to breathe.

Memory of veterans lives on

The documentary, produced by Larry Cappetto, provides a first-hand account of the invasion from the soldiers who were there — on the boats, on the beaches and beside their fallen comrades, who they insist are the true heroes.
“We hope to make this an annual event in remembrance of those who served in the armed forces,” Kathy Reeg, with Kilpatrick’s, said.
The premiere event marked the first time a movie had been shown in the Dixie since the theater installed a new screen and projector.
Kilpatrick’s also donated a flag to the Dixie as a constant symbol of

Ramon finishes strong for ’Dogs

Finishing out his two-year stay with the Bulldogs, Ramon started at second base in 54 out of 58 appearances and wound up as one of the top 15 ranked hitters in the Western Athletic Conference.
He had a .342 average that left him ranked No. 11 among all players in the league.
It wasn’t just the numbers that made for a 360 degrees’ advance from a year ago, but also the fact that the Corpus Christi product was
announced on Monday as a member of the 2006 WAC All-Tournament team.

Closures good for city

The newest bit of construction on Farmerville Street will greatly increase driver and pedestrian safety in that area. Traffic flows quickly in that area with few chances to make a left from Mississippi Avenue.
The city made a wise move when it voted to fix this area so it will be less likely for a vehicular accident to occur.
Construction can also be seen as a sign of a growing city. With the opening of Lowe’s and the future opening of the movie theater, we are glad to see that our southern side of the city and the Service Road have not been forgotten.

Leadership strong in Ruston

My editor, Chuck, and I discussed this before I went to my interview with Pastor Chris. He said, “Ruston loves being involved with churches and their pastors,” and I think this is very true.
There are dozens of churches with various denominations scattered throughout Lincoln Parish, and many of them have very high attendance rates. Several of our prominent area leaders, such as college presidents, mayors and educators attend our local churches, ready and willing to listen to their pastor, priest or reverend.

Soldiers receive gifts from home

“So we started this project, and in order to collect the movies, we decided instead of asking for money, we would ask them to donate used music CDs,” Moore said. “We exchanged them for DVDs at the music and movies store, and now we have several branches of the Movies from Home project operating in Iraq.”
Local sponsors of this project include Ruston Rotary, Ruston Pack & Mail, Sam Goody and Blockbuster Video, which provide supplies, drop-off locations and exchange services. Other drop-off boxes include each of the residence halls on the campus of Louisiana Tech University.

Mulkey cheering on Makenzie

It’s the famed Domino’s squad out of New Orleans, whose head coach is veteran leader Charles Domino, who was also at the helm back when Mulkey and a fellow Lady Techsters’ player was also on the squad.
“Yes, Janice and I played for the Domino’s team,” reflected Mulkey.
“And here it is, Makenzie playing for them now. They have always done a good job there and it’s nice to know that she (Makenzie) can carry on a little tradition in the family.”

Be aware of children when driving

Normally we are able to drive along our city streets during the business day without the fear of a small child running out into the street or a teenage driver focused on their CD player or cell phone instead of the road.
Most of the time our biggest worry is whether or not we can beat the next stop light or get across the railroad tracks that bisect downtown Ruston before the next train blows through.
But during the summer, we must take closer precautions for area youngsters.
