Postage rates to increase Monday

Beginning at midnight on Sunday, the United States Postal Service will raise the rate for a postage stamp from 37 to 39 cents.
The increase is due to rising gas costs, the higher cost of living and the devastation brought on as post offices were put out of use in South Louisiana by hurricanes Katrina and Rita, Ruston Post Office Bulk Mail Clerk Joseph Fontenot said.
“It’s been four years since we had a rate change,” said Ruston Post Office Retail Associate employee Kathy Lenard. “The rates usually go up a little every 4-5 years.”

Lady 'Cats edged in overtime

At least that’s the way Ricky Durrett sized up the situation for Ruston High School’s girls following a tough 49-46 overtime loss to Monroe Ouachita High here Tuesday night.
“Actually, it’s a good game to get us ready for a district (1-5A) game against Natchitoches-Central here Friday night,” said the Lady Bearcats’ head coach. “It should wake us up for the district games and make us a better team. We’ll get back to practice, work on things and be ready for the district game on Friday.”
