RHS football team honored at banquet

Damian Washington and John David Moore earned prestigious awards that are named in honor of two of the school’s former head coaches at the 2013 Ruston High School football banquet.
Washington, a senior defensive lineman, received the Jimmy “Chick” Childress award.
Moore, a senior right end, was recognized as the recipient of the L.J. “Hoss” Garrett Award.
Both awards were presented by Bobby Williams, a former All-State defensive lineman for the Bearcats who went on to play collegiately at LSU.

Fans pay tribute to Robinson

Former Grambling State University and National Football League defensive back Delles Howell talks about the impact the late Eddie Robinson had on his life and playing career during a “Family Day” and open house held last weekend at the museum named in honor of the former Tigers’ legendary head coach. The event also celebrated what would have been birthday No. 94 for Robinson this month.

Moore, Carroll to earn scholar athlete awards

Lincoln Parish will have two representatives receiving awards when the S.M. McNaughton Chapter of the National Football Foundation and College Hall of Fame has its annual scholar athlete banquet Thursday at the East Ridge Country Club in Shreveport. A “Meet and Greet” session is set from 6-6:45 p.m. before the banquet begins at 6:45 p.m.
Presentation of awards will begin at approximately 7:30 p.m.

Colin Davidson Seaman

Graveside services for Colin Davidson Seaman, 67 of Ruston will be 10:30AM Wednesday, February 27, 2013 in Forest Lawn Cemetery in Ruston. Rector Easterling of the Episcopal Church of the Redeemer will officiate. Mr. Seaman was born March 20, 1945 in Waterproof, LA and died Saturday, February 23, 2013 at the Northern Louisiana Medical Center in Ruston.

He is preceded in death by his parents, J.C. Seaman, Sr. and Edith Post Seaman; Brother, J.C. “Shootsie” Seaman.

Ricky Joe Bergeron, Jr.

Funeral services for Ricky Joe Bergeron, Jr., age 14 of Downsville will be held at 2:00pm Wednesday at Fellowship Baptist Church near Dubach with Bro. Connie Smith officiating. Interment will be in Fellowship Cemetery, Dubach. Arrangements are under the direction of Farrar Funeral Home of Farmerville.

Ricky Joe, a student, passed away Friday, February 22, 2013. He was in the Honors Program at Farmerville High School and enjoyed bull riding, football, baseball, Bass fishing and listening to music.

He was preceded in death by his maternal grandfather, S.D. Wilson, Jr.

Witnesses: Man waved gun around

A Grambling man was arrested Saturday after allegedly waving a handgun around in a local park.
Capt. Tim Parker, spokesman for the Ruston Police Department, said the department received several calls on Saturday evening in reference to a man waving a gun around in Woodlawn Park.
Gerrod Devonta Hunter, 20, of 126 Oak Circle in Grambling, was reportedly found with a .9 mm handgun in his possession. Parker said Hunter had reportedly been brandishing a weapon at someone he had been involved with some sort of incident or altercation.

Jam raises $13K for students

Hundreds spent Saturday night rocking in downtown Ruston as the 14th annual John Simoneaux Memorial Jam was held at Sundown Tavern and Ponchatulas. Featuring two stages at Sundown and one at Ponchatulas, the Friday night pre-jam and Saturday night jam brought in 850 attendees and more than $13,000 to honor Simoneaux, a local musician who died in a 2000 car crash, and to benefit Louisiana Tech music students.

Vizza joins celebration

Miss Louisiana Lauren Vizza visited the Eddie G. Robinson Museum for the first time Saturday, and she was inspired.
“It just goes to show that whether you’re from Grambling or from a bigger (place), you can be anything you want.” said Vizza, who garnered quite a bit of attention during the museum’s open house celebrating the birthday of Eddie G. Robinson and Black History Month. “The museum is so amazing and state of the art. I’m excited to be a part of this special event. Being a native of Louisiana, Eddie Robinson is football history.”
