Wreck causes critical injuries

At approximately 4:45 p.m. Wednesday the Ruston Fire Department responded to a 911 call on U.S. Highway 167 at Charlotte Street for a two-car accident, where one of the vehicles rolled over.
One victim was transported to Northern Louisiana Medical Center and was later transported via LifeAir helicopter to LSU Medical Center with critical injuries. The other victim was transported by ambulance to NLMC for minor injuries.

First lady visits local school

Wednesday morning, kindergartners at Choudrant Elementary School were encouraged to read every day as First Lady Supriya Jindal stopped by to read to them.
At 10:30 a.m. the first lady visited Choudrant Elementary for Jumpstart’s annual “Read for the Record” campaign.
Jindal said she has participated in this event for the last five years, and she encourages other First Spouses to do the same.

Kennedy speaks to Rotary Club

Louisiana has plenty of money but doesn’t spend it wisely, state Treasurer John Kennedy said Wednesday.
Debunking often-heard political claims that the state is short on funds, Kennedy said Louisiana’s budget has increased at the same time the state has lost population.
“It’s not how much money we have that is our problem,” Kennedy told the Ruston Rotary Club. “Our problem is how we spend the money we do have.”

‘Angel in the Pawnshop’ takes Dixie stage tonight

Delve into the world of good versus evil, with the Ruston Community’s production of “Angel in the Pawnshop.”
The Dixie Center for the Arts will host the production, which is set to take the stage at 7 p.m. today and will continue through Saturday. A matinee showing will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday.
“Angel in a Pawnshop” marks the first production in RCT’s 36th season and is directed by Mitch Dufour.

Early voting begins Saturday

Early voting in this month’s special election to fill former Rep. Rodney Alexander’s 5th Congressional District seat begins Saturday, but local political watchers say the contest hasn’t stirred much emotion in Lincoln Parish thus far.
“I don’t detect a lot of interest,” Lincoln Parish Registrar of Voters Dianna Stone said.
Alexander, R-Ruston, resigned Sept. 26 to become secretary of Louisiana’s Department of Veterans Affairs. Fourteen candidates are vying for the just more than a year left in Alexander’s congressional term.

Tech, ACHIEVE work to promote financial literacy

Otis Gilley, Clarke Williams/CenturyTel Endowed Professor and Head of the Department of Economics and Finance at Louisiana Tech University, said the need for economic and financial literacy has never been greater.
Now thanks to a partnership between Lincoln ACHIEVE, Tech’s College of Business, and the Federal Reserve Bank of Dallas, the realities of that message are being delivered even more in classrooms throughout Lincoln Parish.
“This has been a passion of mine for some time,” ACHIEVE Coordinator Cathi Cox-Boniol said.
