SHS hosts ‘Speaking of Science’

Students in Chris Campbell’s science classes at Simsboro High School recently extended and enriched their learning through guest lecturers from Louisiana’s “Speaking of Science,” a science and engineering speakers’ bureau. Sponsored by the National Science Foundation and the Board of Regents’ Louisiana Experimental Program to Stimulate Competitive Research, the SoS speakers are counted among the State’s finest teaching and research talent in the science and engineering disciplines.

Alcibee B. Tharp

Alcibee B. Tharp, 91, died Tuesday, October 22, 2013 at her home. Born in Choudrant, Louisiana, she was the daughter of the late Cledith and Alma Collie Butler. Alcibee was a nurse's aid before her retirement and she moved from North Little Rock, Arkansas to the Spring City community in 2005. She was a member of the Women's Missionary Association, the Sunshiner's in Arkansas and the Red Hat Club of Spring City. Alcibee was a member of the North Hills Baptist Church in North Little Rock, Arkansas. She was preceded in death by her husband James P.

Clyde M. Caver

Funeral services will be held for Clyde M. Caver, age 81, at 10:00 a.m., on Friday, October 25, 2013, at Rose-Neath Funeral Home in Arcadia. Bro. Randy
Ray and Bro. Don Woodard will officiate. The interment will follow at St. Rest Cemetery in Dubach, LA. Visitation will be held Thursday from 5:00 until 8:00 p.m.

Storage among top issues at RES

If the Ruston District No. 1 millage tax extension is approved by voters on Nov. 16, teachers at Ruston Elementary School will be most excited about the new storage space they will be afforded.
RES Principal Sonja Walker, who worked closely with former RES principal Shavonne Garner-Price to develop the list of needs at the school, explained that teachers currently have access to very little storage.

Local law enforcement personnel graduate from academy in September

The city of Ruston can rest at ease knowing that new officers from Ruston Police Department and Lincoln Parish Sheriff’s Office completed their 10-week training at police academy and are now training under field training officers on the streets.
On Sept. 26 Taylor Folmar, Corey Gray, Dylan Castenada and Kayla Loyd from RPD and Lamont Freeman from LPSO graduated from the North Delta Regional Training Academy in Monroe. LPSO also hired Brian King recently, but he has not yet completed the official academy training.
Loyd said she has always wanted to be in law enforcement.
