Tech’s Fischer honored

For the second straight week, three different schools have divided up the football player of the week honors as handed out by the Louisiana Sports Writers Association.
Quarterback Bryan Bennett of Southeastern was the offensive recipient, while Sam Scofield of Tulane was the defensive POW with Louisiana Tech place kicker Kyle Fischer of Louisiana Tech the choice as special teams’ player.
Fischer successfully made a school record five field goals Saturday in Louisiana Tech’s 23-7 win over FIU.

Tech volleyball to play at N. Texas

Louisiana Tech’s volleyball team will travel across the state border into Texas this weekend, as the Lady Techsters travel to face North Texas at 7 p.m. today at the Mean Green Volleyball Center in Denton, Texas.
The Conference USA matchup between the two teams will mark the 17th overall meeting between the Lady Techsters and Mean Green in both programs’ history with Tech holding a 12-4 advantage in the series.

Prep teams set for Week 9

The 2103 regular season for area high school football teams begins winding down tonight as the squads play Week 9 contests.
Following are preview capsules on those contests:
Ruston (5-3, 1-2 in 2-5A) at Alexandria (2-6, 1-2)
Kickoff: 7 p.m.; Alexandria
Ruston looks to shake off consecutive losses to perennial district powerhouses West Monroe and Ouachita and get back on a winning track for the final two games of regular-season play.

Grambling’s Miller honored

Junior named SWAC Preseason Player of the Year

After a stellar season last year, Joanna Miller was named the Southwestern Athletic Conference Preseason Player of the Year and first team All-Conference by the league’s coaches and sports information directors earlier this month.
As a team the Lady Tigers were picked to finish fifth in the SWAC pre season poll.

Show support for Alzheimer’s

Millions of people have Alzheimer’s disease, and most of the time, by the time it is caught, it is too late.
According to the Alzheimer’s Association website, there is no cure — there are medications to help the symptoms, but they only work while the disease is moderate. The more the disease progresses, the less the medications actually help. These people who have been or will be diagnosed with Alzheimer’s could be our mothers, fathers or grandparents. It could happen to anyone, so it is important to watch our loved ones so that we can catch the disease early.

On this day in 1512, one of the world’s greatest wonders was exhibited to the public for the first time.
The ceiling of the Sistine Chapel in Rome was one of Michelangelo’s finest works.
According to history.com, said Michelangelo was called to Rome in 1508 to paint the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel — the chief consecrated space in the Vatican.
Michelangelo’s epic ceiling frescoes, which took several years to complete, are among his most memorable works. Central in a complex system of decoration featuring numerous figures are nine panels devoted to Biblical world history.

Goodbye, domestic violence

She was my best friend.
I didn’t understand why my parents didn’t like for me to spend the night with her, and I didn’t think twice when my mom had to take care of her mom after fights. They were just fights. Everyone’s parents fight.
It took me until my junior year of college to connect the dots and realize that my best friend since kindergarten was one of the estimated 3.3 million children who are exposed to domestic violence each year.
