Man charged with attempted murder

A Ruston man is in jail after being charged with attempted murder.
At about 6:45 a.m. Sept. 21, Ruston Police responded to multiple 911 calls of a domestic disturbance on Miranda Drive between 40-year-old Angelia Woods and 46-year-old Jacques Patrick Williams.
Callers reportedly stated that Williams had begun to stab Woods repeatedly in the parking lot of an apartment on Miranda Drive.

Library business

Sex offender policy, ethics discussed

Speed bumps, ethics exams and a new sex offender law were the topics of discussion at the Lincoln Parish Library Board of Control meeting on Wednesday.
Library Director Vivian McCain said in recent weeks, three new speed bumps — costing a total of $1,000 — have been installed in the library’s parking lot.
Board member Virgil Orr asked if the new bumps had been effective at reducing motorists’ speed.

Local girl scouts learn new skills, practice community service

School-age girls in Lincoln Parish might uncover friendship, new skills and the satisfaction of helping others through the Girl Scouts of Louisiana Pines to the Gulf.
Shamika Hill, girl scouts service unit manager for the parish, said the group is seeking girls ages 5 through high-school senior to join the girl scouts.

Farmerville High moving forward with name change

After years of taking in students from other schools throughout the district, Farmerville High School will soon officially become Union Parish High School.
The decision to change the school’s name was made by the school board in 2010, after all high schools in the district except Downsville had consolidated with Farmerville High.
The board then voted to table the passed motion until the 2012-13 school year.

Women soccer players encouraged to try out for Tigers

GRAMBLING — His team’s kicking game is so bad this season that Grambling State University football Coach Doug Williams is considering all viable options, including women.
Desperate for a kicker immediately, he said he’ll consider “one of the soccer girls who can kick it through the upright.”
Williams said he’s open to options and suggestions, including international students on campus who have grown up playing what Americans call soccer, maybe students who play on the university’s intramural center club soccer team. “I would love to see one or two them try out,” the coach said in an interview.

Tech earns more votes in polls

Louisiana Tech University made more progress in the weekly USA Today coaches’ national football poll for Football Bowl Subdivision teams announced on Sunday.
The Bulldogs (3-0), coming off of a 52-24 road victory on Saturday against the University of Illinois is now at No. 33 with 28 points.
Last week, Tech shared the No. 35 position.

RJHS seventh graders suffer loss

Ruston Junior High’s seventh grade football team recently suffered a 44-30 loss to Good Hope.
The Bearkittens got a four-touchdown effort from Jessie Sawyer, but was hampered by three turnovers and giving up a kickoff return that resulted in a touchdown.

Take steps to protect babies, toddlers
