Youth rewarded for good behavior; parents visit school

We are off to a great start at Ruston Elementary! We are very excited to welcome several new members to our faculty and staff. Our students have been very busy learning about their new school, getting to know their teachers and making new friends. We would like to take this time to say “thank you” to our parents who came out for our walk-through, Open House and Bring Your Parents to School Day. The turnouts have been amazing!

Lessons learned through ‘Rachel’s Challenge’

Cedar Creek School students in grades kindergarten through 12 participated in the Rachel’s Challenge Program on Sept. 11.
Rachel Joy Scott was the first student killed in the 1999 Columbine tragedy. While her life was tragically cut short during the Columbine High School shooting on April 20, 1999, Rachel Joy Scott’s shining example of kindness and compassion was not defeated that day.

RHS: Another duel with Tide

Ruston High gets another chance to make it 2-0 against Minden High this season.
Well, sort of.
Although the Bearcats were a 31-8 winner over the Crimson Tide in late August, that particular game won’t count in the official season record because it was registered in the annual “Jam at the Joe” at Joe Aillet Stadium.

Remembering J.P. Fitzmorris

Throughout this 2012 season, members of the Ruston High School football team will honor the memory of the late J.P. Fitzmorris, a former Bearcat player who died while serving his country in the U.S. Navy earlier this year. A decal of Fitzmorris’ RHS number “44” is affixed to the back of the Bearcats’ helmets.

Funeral services for Mrs. Ruth Helen Upshaw Everett, age 84, will be held Thursday, September 27, 2012 at 2:00 PM in Central Baptist Church with family and nephew, Dr. Rex Horne officiating. Interment will follow in Canaan Cemetery, Spearsville, LA under the direction of Bailey Funeral Home, Springhill, LA.

Visitation will begin Thursday at 9:00 AM in Central Baptist Church with the family receiving friends from 12:00 PM until 1:45 PM.

MCS hosts grand opening

Mortgage Contracting Services opens new Ruston facility

The expectant arrival of Mortgage Contracting Services into the Ruston area commenced with a ceremonial ribbon cutting on Tuesday at the new facilities located at 1300 Celebrity Drive, just off Interstate 20.
MCS works with mortgage servicing companies to maintain vacant properties and to protect neighborhoods from blight. The company has grown six-fold in the past six years and also maintains offices in Tampa, Fla., and Plano, Texas.

Tech leader search begins

Louisiana Tech student and junior class president Austin Vining expresses his thoughts to the Presidential Search Committee about what the students want from their new president.

The Louisiana Tech University Presidential Search Committee met for the first time Tuesday afternoon to discuss the procedures and policies for the search process to replace current President Dan Reneau and to get some feedback from the local community about what they want in the replacement.
While the search will continue for the next few months, many community members and Tech representatives made it very clear that they do have someone in mind to replace Tech’s familiar president, and it’s with a candidate who is already very familiar with the university — Les Guice, vice president for Tech’s Research and Development and former dean of the College of Engineering and Science.

GSU kicks off Founders Week

GRAMBLING — Grambling State University’s largest annual gathering celebrating founding president Charles P. Adams began Monday with an official proclamation and a community breakfast that brought out a diverse group of more than 350 people.
The annual Founders Week Fellowship Breakfast was held in the university’s Black and Gold Room in the Favrot Student Union, celebrating Adams’ vision to create what is today GSU 111 years ago.
