Hayes places No. 16

Tech long jumper ends big year in London

Chelsea Hayes’ magical year ended Tuesday.
The most decorated track and field performer in Louisiana Tech University history closed out a super senior season by placing No. 16 in the women’s long jump at the 2012 Summer Olympic Games in London.
Hayes had a mark of 20-10.75 to put her among the Top 20 competitors in her event and also No. 8 in her group. The top dozen finishes moved on to today’s medal round at Olympic Stadium.

Dawson resigns at Tech

Long time Louisiana Tech University softball coach Sarah Dawson resigned Monday to accept a position as an assistant coach at UNC-Greensboro as the 10-year veteran of the Lady Techster program departs Ruston.
Dawson was hired by former Tech Athletics Director Jim Oakes in 2003 and for the past decade has built the Lady Techsters back into a competitive program competing in one of the toughest non-AQ softball conferences in the country.

Tech work ethic solid

Louisiana Tech practiced for under two nonconsecutive hours as lightning forced a mid-practice intermission Tuesday evening in Ruston.
The Bulldogs opened practice on the Tech practice fields at 6 p.m. but less than an hour into practice lightning forced a stoppage and sent the team into the locker room for a 40-minute delay. The team returned to action inside Joe Aillet Stadium to finish the day’s work.
The most impressive performance of the day was the team not allowing the break to interrupt its work ethic as the group had a better session after the delay than before.

G-Men getting into groove

GRAMBLING — The Grambling State University Tigers’ football team is getting into a groove following their first night in pads on Monday.
The G-Men had an energetic practice that was filled with some hard hitting and stiff competition.
Head Coach Doug Williams felt the team worked hard on day one in pads.

Mildred Elaine Robinson Smelley

Mildred Elaine Robinson Smelley, of Bossier City, LA, passed way Sunday night at Baptist Memorial Hospital-Desoto in Southaven, MS of a sudden illness. She was surrounded and comforted by her loved ones. Mildred was born to Charles Bruce and Bernie Ophelia Abercrombie Robinson in Danville, LA on November 12, 1926.
