No wonder Ben Haddox and Cougar Nation is excited about the 2012 football season at Cedar Creek High.
Why not, right?
The Cougars went 9-2 in 2011, losing only to No. 3 ranked Haynesville and eventual state Class 1A Louisiana High School Athletic Association champ Monroe Ouachita Christian by a combined eight points.

Tech wraps up fall grid camp

Louisiana Tech broke camp Wednesday and ended the three-week grind with a mid-afternoon practice on the Tech Practice Fields.
The coaches elected to hold practice in the afternoon for a test in the heat and to provide an extended period of rest with players getting today off.

Texas foes boost Tech slate

Louisiana Tech University’s football team will be doing the “Texas two-step” during the 2012 season.
Well, okay, actually it’s the “Texas five-step,” if you will.
Of the dozen games on the Bulldogs’ schedule, five are against teams based in Texas.

There will be no real changes when it comes to the Lincoln Parish School System’s involvement in transporting students to New Living Word School this year.
James Payton, transportation coordinator for the Lincoln Parish School Board, said any rumors that things will change are false.
“We provided transportation for New Living Word students last year, and we will this year,” Payton said.

Racing horses

Area residents who wish to learn a little more about horse riding will have a couple of opportunities with events scheduled at the North Louisiana Exhibition Center.
On Saturday-Sunday, Lance Graves is scheduled to have a barrel racing clinic.
“He is a world champion barrel racer and the leading futurity in the United States,” said Merrill O’Neal, clinic manager. “This is his fourth time to come here to teach the clinic. He is teaching the basics of barrel racing for riders and horse trainers.”

Man dead from gunshot

The body of 25-year-old Brandon Barrett, of Ruston, was found within a wooded area alongside Louisiana Highway 33 after the Lincoln Parish Sheriff’s Office received a call from a concerned individual around 11:20 p.m. Wednesday.

LPPJ recommends board appointments

The Lincoln Parish Police Jury Personnel/Benefits Committee met earlier this month to make recommendations for appointments to multiple boards.
Nominees must show up to the September Police Jury meeting in order for their appointments to be confirmed.
For the Lincoln Parish Fire District, committee members approved seven-year incumbent Ray Robinson and three-year member Michael Fulton, a retired Texas firefighter, for the two open spots. All committee members approved the two for appointment, with the exception of Juror Walter Pullen.

Sales tax collections expected to go down

The Lincoln Parish Sales and Use Tax Commission met Aug. 21 to discuss second-quarter returns.
Jerry Moore, administrator for the Sales and Use Tax Office, forecasted a decrease in the parish sales tax collections for the remainder of the year.
“We are currently at a leveling off period, but I think we could start to see a downward trend,” Moore said. “Construction is pretty much over at (Louisiana) Tech and construction is usually what drives sales tax.

White speaks at Kiwanis meeting

Louisiana Tech University head basketball coach, Mike White, spoke at the Kiwanis Club of Ruston’s regular meeting on Aug. 9.
The Kiwanis of Ruston, a division of Kiwanis International, meet on Thursdays at noon at the Ruston Country Club.

Taylor speaks to Lions Club

Lincoln Parish Sheriff Deputy Kirk Taylor was a recent guest speaker of the Ruston Lions Club.
Deputy Taylor is the D.A.R.E. officer for Lincoln Parish. He spoke briefly on the challenges of his department in dealing with the issues faced by area youth.
