Delta to see $2.3M budget cut

Community college tuition raised 10%

Even though the Delta Community College will see a loss of $2.3 million from its eight campus, 12-parish system, students should not notice a difference in education quality, according to school officials.
Delta Interim Chancellor Jerry Ryan said that the system — which includes a Ruston and Farmerville campus — lost 5.2 percent of its budget from state money due to budget cuts, but the school managed to cut the $2,290,577 it was required while trying to make the cuts transparent to the students.

Special education teachers prep for school

Doyle Sandifer was looking for any job he could find after graduating with a degree in psychology when he accidentally stumbled upon his passion for teaching special education.
“It was just happenstance,” said Sandifer, a teacher at Cypress Springs Elementary. “My job options were anything I could get. I took my first job at Cypress Springs, and I immediately fell in love.”
Ivory Bass, a special education teacher at Ruston Junior High School, said she had a similar path.

Crafting new rules for city of Ruston

Draft zoning code unveiled, downtown merchants comment

Community stakeholders received a preview of Ruston’s new draft zoning code for the downtown area during a recent presentation at the Ruston Civic Center.
Ruston Mayor Dan Hollingsworth said the current code has confusions and contradictions, and the aim is to modernize it and make it more user friendly.
“This is a project that was born of citizen desires and driven by citizen input,” he said.

Tech student receives third in steel design competition

A graduate student in architecture in Louisiana Tech’s College of Liberal Arts has received national honors for steel design.
Michael Markham from Haughton was recently awarded third place in the 2011-2012 Association of Collegiate Schools of Architecture/American Institute of Steel Construction Steel Design Competition.
The award consists of a cash prize of $750 for Markham and a $500 prize awarded to his faculty sponsor.
