DART event educates

Dahmer speaks on abuse and the workplace

An employee is frequently absent, receives constant phone calls or text messages and startles easily.
These could be signs this person is a victim of domestic abuse, says Tracy Dahmer, programs director with the office of Louisiana Attorney General Buddy Caldwell.
Dahmer served as the keynote speaker at the Domestic Abuse Resistance Team’s 12th annual conference, “Collaboration is the Key,” on Thursday at the Ruston Civic Center.

Rea to speak to grads

Louisiana Tech University looked to one of its own to speak at summer commencement, which will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, at the Thomas Assembly Center.
Kenneth Rea, who will officially retire Aug. 31 from serving as vice president for academic affairs at Tech, has been named keynote speaker for summer commencement.

Ruston NAMI focuses on senior services

Seniors in our community have watched the world change around them, and for some those changes have been a little hard to cope with and understand.
So, this month the Ruston branch of the National Alliance for Mental Health educational seminar will focus on services geared directly for seniors in the community.

Gov. Jindal announces $150M in road projects

Gov. Bobby Jindal this week announced a $150 million investment to repair around 360 miles of rural roads across the state.
The investment is part of the governor’s initiative to bond out half of the State Highway Improvement Fund, which will generate $425 million over three years to repair approximately 1,100 miles of rural roads across Louisiana. In the first year, the $150 million will be used for nearly 80 projects.

Tech’s degrees give bang for their buck

Nearly a year ago, Louisiana Tech University achieved a First Tier ranking among “National Universities,” according to the U.S. News and World Report’s 2012 Best Colleges list. Tech and Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge were the only two Louisiana universities named to this list.
Released Monday, Tech once again made it onto another praised national ranking list. Newsweek and The Daily Beast named Tech No. 13 in affordability for in-state students and No. 25 for out-of- state students.

New games can change world

Growing up, playing video games was never really viewed as a productive way of passing time, or for that matter, as an acceptable way for someone to make a living.
My dad, while he always got me the Super Nintendos and Xboxes, never really understood the machines he spent so much money on, other than the fact they kept me from cleaning my room, doing my chores or even from my schoolwork.
