South La. group tour comes to Ruston

Fifty-two ladies recently discovered that Ruston is more than just peaches.
The Ruston Lincoln Convention and Visitors Bureau recently welcomed a group tour from South Louisiana. The tour was organized by Janice Fontenot, activity coordinator for the Ville Platte Council on Aging.
Throughout the year the Ville Platte Council on Aging, in conjunction with the St. Landry Parish Council on Aging, plan group tours for those who participated in the Council on Aging program. The trips are designed to be fun and engaging to keep those who attend vibrant and active in their retirement.

CenterPoint Energy warns bill-paying scam circulating

CenterPoint Energy is issuing a warning to raise awareness among consumers about a scam claiming that President Obama will pay their utility bills. 
The scam claims the need for consumers’ Social Security and bank routing numbers.
There is no such energy funding or credit available, and customers should always be wary of anyone asking for personal information.

Phillips elected treasurer of state CPA Society

Thomas J. Phillips Jr., CPA, CGMA, was elected treasurer of the Society of Louisiana Certified Public Accountants’ (LCPA) Board of Directors.
Phillips is the director of the School of Accountancy at Louisiana Tech University and also serves as the KPMG endowed professor.

GRAMBLING — Dawrence Roberts likely won’t be running under the radar during the 2012 football season.
After the super sophomore year he had for Grambling State University in 2011, everybody this side of the Southwestern Athletic Conference headquarters in Birmingham, Ala., knows about him.
Still, the 5-9 and 180-pounder is expected to come up with some more big numbers for the upcoming season.

‘Pigskins & Pearls’ sold out again

Popular clinic to be held Thursday at Squire Creek Country Club

Louisiana Tech University’s annual “Pigskins & Pearls,” the women’s football clinic and luncheon run by Sonny and Kate Dykes, has sold out for the third consecutive year.
The annual event, in its third year, features a 90-minute clinic and luncheon for women in North Louisiana that includes Tech players and coaches.
Kate Dykes, wife of Tech head coach Sonny Dykes, organizes the annual event with proceeds going to the Boy’s and Girl’s Club.
Over the past two years, more than $6,600 has been donated to the Boy’s & Girl’s Club from Pigskins & Pearls.

Earning championship honors in the coed division of the 2012 Ruston Parks and Recreation Department softball program was Holland Grove Baptist Church, which defeated Pass the Hit Stick 15-4 in the title contest.
