Youth participate in Celebrate Girls workshop

“Learning their self-worth and gaining knowledge, the most refreshing thing for me is seeing the girls raise their hands to ask questions showing that they want to learn,” expressed Cathy Judd.
Judd with the LSU AgCenter held a workshop for girls between sixth and eighth grade, who are currently members of 4-H. 4-H is a youth development organization, which helps youth gain academic, leadership and life skills. Having held the Celebrate Girls workshop for three years, Judd plans to continue it. With 22 young girls attending, and help from adult and teen volunteers, the workshop remains successful.

Keeping up with youngsters ends with a visit to the hospital

After six weeks of travel and visiting with relatives, life is once again normal — almost, that is.
For the first time in many months, I went to the emergency room with angina. No big deal — diagnosis: a 91-year-old trying to keep up with people half her age and younger.
The real miracle was that grandson-in-law Jonathan sped across Dallas, running red lights and didn’t get a ticket nor get creamed. The best thing coming out of it was to see his concern. I think he loves me.

Barlow, Williams to marry in mountains

Mr. and Mrs. Steve Barlow, of Grapevine, Texas, are pleased to announce the engagement and forthcoming marriage of their daughter, Aubrey Claire Barlow, of Salida, Colo., to J. Oliver Williams Jr., also of Salida.

The bride-elect is the granddaughter of Pat and JoAnn Barlow, of Ruston. She is a graduate of Grapevine High School and attended Louisiana Tech University. She is currently employed with the Hinerman Group in Salida.

Duke, Posey to unite in matrimony

Mr. and Mrs. Scott Duke, of Choudrant, are pleased to announce the engagement and forthcoming marriage of their daughter, Robin Michelle Duke, to Ronald Gene Posey Jr., of Choudrant.

The bride-elect is the great-granddaughter of Hazel Williams, of Stephens, Ark., and the late L.L. William. She is the granddaughter of Sue Ann Herter, of Kellys, Jerry Buvens, of Kellys, Raymond Duke, of Ruston, and the late Linda Duke. She is a 2007 graduate of Choudrant High School and currently employed with Green Clinic in Ruston.

Torbor, Johnson to wed in August ceremony

The Rev. and Mrs. Billy Ray Torbor, of Ruston, are pleased to announce the engagement and approaching marriage of their daughter, Lori, to Mickey Johnson, of Dubach.

The bride-elect is the granddaughter of the Rev. H.P. and Minnie Crowe and the late Will and Eliza Torbor. Lori is a graduate of Ruston High School and a 2006 graduate of Grambling State University.

Tech football scores touchdown for club

In an effort to raise money for the North Central Louisiana Boys and Girls Clubs, along with educating some local ladies about the ins and outs of football, Louisiana Tech Head Football Coach Sonny Dykes and his wife, Kate, hosted their third annual Pigskins and Pearls clinic at Squire Creek Country Club on Thursday.
The event drew 200 attendees and sold 24 tables.

Local man killed

in

A Ruston man was killed on Thursday in a motorcycle accident.
At 11:35 a.m., troopers assigned to Louisiana State Police Troop F responded to a single-vehicle crash on Louisiana Highway 3005 south of U.S. Highway 80.
The preliminary investigation revealed that a 2008 Kawasaki motorcycle driven by 41-year-old David R Hackney, of Ruston, was traveling north on La. 3005 when it left the roadway and struck a culvert.

LDWF opposes island project

Despite opposition from the Louisiana Department of Wildlife & Fisheries, local land developer Jim Farley is committed to a residential project on two Lake D’Arbonne Islands.
Farley describes his Maricopa Island project as “the biggest development to ever hit Union Parish.”
Farley plans to build a subdivision on two islands located on the south side of the Mixing Hole on Lake D’Arbonne.
