State decides on new driver regulations

A bill passed in this spring’s legislative session will usher in sweeping new changes to Louisiana’s driver licensing law. The new law, which takes effect Wednesday mandates an increased number of classroom training hours as well as behind-the-wheel driving instruction for first-time licensure applicants.

This will be the final year of membership in the Western Athletic Conference for the Bulldogs’ program. Tech began its affiliation with the far-reaching league in 2001 and won a title in its very first year. When the 2013 campaign begins, the ’Dogs will be competing in Conference USA.

For the longest, I had an 8-by-10 photograph of Joe Paterno patrolling the sidelines at Beaver Stadium situated within arm’s length of my office desk.
It was a photo I had snapped during two separate trips into Happy Valley, Pa., back in the early 2000s, when Louisiana Tech University had played against the Nittany Lions of Penn State.
Paterno is shown wearing his ever-present blue Nittany Lions’ windbreaker, high-top black athletic shoes and — of course — those familiar Coke bottle-sized glasses.

Bulldogs add Parker to staff

Longtime GSU assistant joins Tech baseball program

Louisiana Tech University head baseball coach Wade Simoneaux has announced the hiring of former Grambling State assistant coach Olen Parker as the new volunteer assistant for the Bulldogs’ baseball team.
Parker, a former standout player and assistant coach at Grambling State, brings a wealth of experience to the Bulldog program from a personnel and playing standpoint by assisting with the catchers, bullpen, infielders and hitters on a day-to-day basis.

White’s Tech hoopsters in ‘Classic’

’Dogs chosen to be in coaches’ Hall of Fame event

KANSAS CITY, MO — The National Association of Basketball Coaches have announced that the field for the 2012 CBE Hall of Fame Classic has been set.
Kansas, Saint Louis, Texas A&M and Washington State will serve as the four host round participants for this year’s CBE Hall of Fame Classic, with the opening round games beginning Nov. 9.
Each team will play two games on campus before advancing to the championship rounds Nov. 19-20 at Sprint Center in Kansas City, Mo.

Jackson-Bienville area: ‘For Sale’

I don’t remember the date but it had to be more than 25 years ago when I was invited, along with another writer, on a deer hunt to the Jackson Bienville wildlife management area south of Ruston.
After spending the night in the old green cabin that was area headquarters at the time, we were transported to stands for a morning hunt.

State Hall replay shows set for Monday, Tuesday

NATCHITOCHES – Cox Sports Television, in association with Louisiana Sports Writers Association productions, is continuing its coverage of the 2012 Louisiana Sports Hall of Fame induction ceremonies .
The first telecast was held earlier this month and featured highlights from the induction ceremony held last month at the Natchitoches Events Center.
The show will be replayed several times on Cox affiliates throughout the network system.

Rathburn-Gillon win RCC ‘Classic’

in

Chris Rathburn and Kane Gillon finished with a championship performance at the annual Ruston Country Club golf “Classic” held recently.
The Rathburn-Gillon duo ended with a score of 124 to edge out Daryl Altic-Chad Farrar (125) for top honors in the championship flight. Placing third was the tandem of Donnie Carter and Chad Carter with a 127.
