NATCHITOCHES — Former Ruston High School quarterback Brad Laird, Northwestern State’s associate head football coach and defensive coordinator, will leave that post July 2 to become Acting Director of University Advancement at NSU.
He will succeed Drake Owens, who has handled that role since 2008 and recently announced his departure later this summer.
Demon football coach Bradley Dale Peveto said the move is an “unexpected, special opportunity” for Laird and a “great move for the entire university.”

Tech pitcher joins Phils, GSU infielder bound for A’s

One day after being selected in round No. 22 of the Major League Baseball Draft, Louisiana Tech University junior pitcher Jeb Stefan signed with the Philadelphia Phillies Thursday morning.
The Lafayette native had one year of college eligibility remaining but opted to bypass his final season at Tech in order to pursue his dream of playing professionally.
Stefan, a 6-foot-4-inch, 225-pound right hander, will head to Clearwater, Florida this weekend for a week of spring training before joining the Williamsport (Pa.) Crosscutters – the Phillies Short-Season A organization.

Gun bill should be thought out

in
Aswell, Taylor.jpg

Throughout my entire life, I have managed to never shoot a single gun, rifle, pistol or projectile weapon — other than one that is full of BBs or on a video game.
While I did have the occasional target practice at a milk jug, tin can or random bird, I never really cared too much for the whole “gun” discussion. Sure, I have had friends tell me there is nothing as relaxing as taking a Beretta to the range and unloading a few clips, but my interest in firing holes into objects was about as big as my desire to be shot myself, so I just stayed away from them and never really thought much of it.

Debating gay marriage

in
Gallagher, Maggie.jpg

This week, the full 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals refused to hear any more arguments on gay marriage.
Appellate Judge Diarmuid O’Scannlain’s dissent was scathing: “Based on a two-judge majority’s gross misapplication of Romer v. Evans, we have now declared that animus must have been the only conceivable motivation for a sovereign state to have remained committed to a definition of marriage that has existed for millennia,” he said. Worse, the judge went on, the decision overrules the votes of 7 million Californians based on an interpretation of Romer v. Evans that would be “unrecognizable” to those who wrote it.
