City's festival of pride

in
Bleich, Joe C.jpg

We are about to conclude the 62nd Peach Festival. Maybe this could also be called the “Pride Festival” as an illustrative, temporarily used substitute description of the Peach Festival, which helps us show what this community is about and that for which we stand — a quality place to live with people who care.

Making the most of your job change finances

in
Moore, Byron.jpg

Question: The company I work for has been sold. Previously we were a non-profit entity. Now we will do business as a for profit entity.
That means we have to change our retirement plan from a 403(b) plan to a 401(k) plan. Is there a big difference between these kinds of plans? What are my options?

Answer: Retirement plans have become crossover artists.
It seems like every week another popular singer (they like to be called artists) has done a “cross-over.” They leave the genre that brought them fame and fortune and cross over into a new style of music.

Learn to know when a will is ripe for revision

in
Conville, Bobby.jpg

Some types of pears and other fruit don’t change color as they ripen. You have to feel the softening. If you wait too long, you’ll eat overly sweet fruit or have to throw it away.
Similarly, if your will has been sitting in your desk or another safe place for awhile, it may have passed its peak financial efficiency unnoticed.
A will that has been signed and witnessed stays valid until the time — if ever — when you revoke it. Your financial condition may have changed in ways your present will doesn’t reflect.

Do not take a vacation break from investing

in
Fallin, Randy.jpg

Summer is here — which means a vacation most likely isn’t far away. Whether you’re hitting the road, jumping on a plane or even enjoying a “staycation” at home, you’re probably looking forward to some down time with your family. But not every aspect of your life should be relaxed.
Specifically, you don’t want to take a vacation from investing — which means you need to become a diligent, year-round investor.
Here are a few suggestions that can help:

Hall weekend means plenty of memories

in
Davis, OK.jpg

NATCHITOCHES —This is the sports weekend I’ve been waiting for since, well, 12 months ago.
No sooner than when one Louisiana Sports Hall of Fame induction event ends, I’m eager for another one to get started again.
It’s a great time for anyone who has a deep appreciation and respect for the long running tradition and legacy in athletics that our state has provided for so many years.
And for the past three days, there’s been plenty of events crowding the Hall of Fame celebration calendar:

NATCHITOCHES — Warrick Dunn may be short changing himself.
And it doesn’t just have a thing to do with his physical stature (5-9, 187).
When asked about being one of the members of the 2012 Louisiana Sports Hall of Fame induction class that was enshrined here Saturday night, Dunn offered:
“I feel I’m still at the bottom of the totem pole when you look at all of the great ones that are in this Hall of Fame.”

Lincoln Parish Hall of Fame membership total nears 50

in
BRADSHAWWILLIW.jpg

NATCHITOCHES — Lincoln Parish’s membership roll call is about to turn “50.”
Saturday night’s 2012 edition of the Louisiana Sports Hall of Fame induction ceremonies increased the parish’s representation for the state’s highest honor in athletics to 49.
Going in from the parish: former Grambling State University basketball star Aaron James and ex-Louisiana Tech University football standout Roger Carr.
That tandem, whose college careers almost overlapped five miles from each other in the mid-1970s, will join an impressive group of representatives from the local area.
