Nellan Maurice Patton Doss

Funeral service for Nellan Maurice Patton Doss, age 80, of Dubach, LA will be held at 10:00 AM Friday, June 22, 2012 at Harmony Chapel United Methodist Church in Hico, LA. Officiating the service will be Rev. Don Lanier. Interment will follow at Harmony Chapel Cemetery under the direction of Kilpatrick Funeral home in Ruston.

Mrs. Doss was born February 19, 1932 in Homer, LA and passed away June 19, 2012 in Hico, LA.
She was preceded in death by her husband; James Doss and grandson: Matthew Doss.

Mrs. Doss was a member of Harmony Chapel United Methodist Church.

Lois Marie (Ree) Fails Pearce

Funeral services celebrating the life of Lois Marie (Ree) Fails Pearce, 85, will be held at 10 a.m. on Friday, June 22, 2012 at Temple Baptist Church, Ruston, Louisiana. Officiating will be Dr. Rick Byargeon, Rev. Dale Oden, and Rev. David Abernathy. Interment will follow at Forest Lawn Cemetery under the direction of Kilpatrick Funeral Home in Ruston. Visitation will be held Thursday, June 21, 2012, 5 — 7 p.m. at Temple Baptist Church. Ree was born November 29, 1926 in Kilbourne, Louisiana. She went peacefully to be with her Lord and Savior on June 19, 2012.

Funeral services for Floe Lambert Martin, age 97, of Bernice, LA, will be 9:30 AM Saturday, July 23, 2012, at Bernice City Cemetery with Dr Johnie Adkins, Jr. officiating the service. Interment will follow under the direction of Kilpatrick Funeral Home of Ruston, LA.
Mrs. Martin was born on August 12, 1914, in Spearsville, LA, and died on June 17, 2012, in Bernice, LA.

Vivian Dell Holder, 74, peacefully entered her Heavenly Home on Saturday, June 16, 2012 at The Oaks of Louisiana in Shreveport following a courageous battle with cancer. A Memorial Service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, June 22, 2012 at First Baptist Church in Shreveport with Dr. Jeff Raines and Rev. Ronney Joe Webb officiating.

Norvis Daniels was born June 27, 1921 to the late Drew and Everleaner Reed Daniels in the Liberty Hill Community. At an early age, she united with the Liberty Hill Baptist Church.

Tuition to rise at Tech

On Monday, the University of Louisiana System Board of Supervisors approved a 10 percent tuition increase at Louisiana Tech University.
In February, the board voted for the tuition changes for all of its schools.
The Tech tuition increase, and any others, are contingent on the schools meeting the requirements of the 2010 LA Grad Act, a set of 52 performance benchmarks measuring student success.

Safety taught

A group of children from Alma J. Brown Elementary School got to get a hands-on demonstration of what the men and women paid to protect their homes from fires do for a living on Tuesday, all while learning plenty of valuable lessons to help them prepare for any future fire emergencies.
Grambling Fire Department assistant chief David Wells said the department decided to put on the event to give the students at the elementary school a chance to participate in a Juneteenth event.

Church bowling tournament set

Ruston Parks and Recreation has teamed up with the Louisiana Tech Lambright Sports and Wellness Center to host the first annual area Church Bowling Tournament July 9,10 and 12.
Emily Essex, coordinator for intramural and club sports at the Lambright Center, said the summer quarter is a good time to pair up with RPAR, in an effort to enhance community relations.

Art show to benefit DART

Art Innovations’ new show “Anatomy of a Home” opens from 6 p.m. - 9 p.m. today.
The opening event features a sit-down home-cooked meal and live entertainment by MDM, “Mission Driven Movement.” Admission to the opening reception is $15 per person, with $5 of each ticket going to the Domestic Abuse Resistance Team.
“I’ve long believed in art as advocacy,” said Debra Faircloth, DART’s community advocate.
