Murder arrest made

Ruston Police Chief Stephen J. Rogers reported today that Cameron Kinte Mays, 26, of Ruston, was charged in connection with two reported home invasions and a death that occurred last week in Ruston.
Police responded to a reported home invasion and rape that occurred on June 4. The victim, a 20-year-old female, reportedly was at home on Robert Street on that night, when two armed intruders broke into her residence, bound the victim and one of them sexually assaulted her.
The suspects allegedly stole several items from the victim’s residence.

Hopewell reunited

On Saturday, the Hopewell School Foundation celebrated its reunion and scholarship award with a “Meet and Greet,” parade, community picnic and gala.
At the picnic, community members gathered and grilled at the Dubach Pond Pavilion following the parade.
“This is such a good thing,” said Naomi Ross, former student and teacher of Hopewell School.
“We just want to give back to this great community.”

House lost to lightning blaze?

An unoccupied house received major fire damage early this morning resulting in what looks to be a total loss.
Ruston Fire Department Public Education Officer Eric Brazzel said at approximately 5:10 a.m. today, RFD units responded a house fire at 901 Arlington St. to find flames running through the attic of the house.
Brazzel said the units that responded had the fire under control within 30 minutes of being there, but the house had suffered substantial damage due to the fire.

Peach exhibit to feature local art

As the weekend approaches, the North Central Louisiana Arts Council is preparing to showcase regional talent in the Squire Creek Louisiana Peach Festival Art Exhibit.
The art exhibit will feature participants from various age demographics and skill levels in a host of various media. Children and youth will participate in three different age groups; 8 and under, 9-12 and 13-18, whereas adult categories include opaque, transparent, miscellaneous, original crafts and photography.

Organization seeks 60 new brothers, sisters to serve

Big Brothers Big Sisters of Northeast Louisiana is currently enrolling new children into the program to be matched with volunteer mentors.
According to the organization, so these children won’t have to wait for the life changing benefits of being matched with mentors, they have taken on the challenge of recruiting 60 new mentors by July 31.

Pruning crape myrtles, killing moles

Here is one I have not heard before.
A client called me the other day wanting to know how to prune a crape myrtle to look like an ostrich? You know, with the bare legs and the fluff ball on top.
My reply was “your simple description is good but I have never heard of it before.”

Junior Auxiliary of Ruston recently selected board members for the 2012-13 year. Junior Auxiliary is a national nonprofit organization that encourages members to render charitable services ,which are beneficial to the general public, with particular emphasis on children.
Junior Auxiliary of Ruston was chartered by a group of caring, enthusiastic women in 1983 and continues to grow and thrive throughout Lincoln Parish.Volunteers work throughout the year on a variety of projects that focus on local children and families in need of assistance.

Tech accounting graduate earns prestigious Elijah Watt Sells Award

Timothy Andrew Smith, an accounting graduate from Louisiana Tech University’s College of Business, has received the 2011 Elijah Watt Sells Award presented by the American Institute of CPAs (AICPA.)
The award is presented to candidates from throughout the U.S. who obtain a cumulative average score of at least 95.50 across all four sections of the Uniform CPA Examination, complete testing during the previous calendar year, and pass all four sections of the examination on their first attempt.

Less than six months after having been chosen as the Ray Guy Award winner as the top punter in the country for the 2011 season, the Louisiana Tech University special teams’ star has been selected to two different preseason All-American squads.
