Kunz shares MVP award

Cedar Creek slugger honored in 2-1A

Stephen Kunz put up huge numbers for Cedar Creek High’s baseball team during the 2012 season and now they’ve paid off.
The senior infielder was announced this week as the co-Most Valuable Player in District 2-1A along with pitcher Mark Laird of Monroe Ouachita Chritian.
Kunz, a candidate for the annual Class 1A All-State squad to be chosen in upcoming weeks by the Louisiana Sports Writers Association, ended the regular season with a .450 batting average.

Grambling flattens JSU, 11-5

GRAMBLING — Catcher Jose Longoria of Grambling State University could be heading to All-Southwestern Athletic Conference recognition if a Friday performance against Jackson State University is any measuring stick.
The junior catcher from Odessa, Texas, who is one of the Top 15 ranked hitters in the league drove in four runs to help the G-Men topple the Eastern Division leaders 11-5 in the first contest of a two-game, regular season-ending series.

‘Inside’ show set Monday

Fans of Louisiana Tech University’s baseball program can tune in Monday to hear Head Coach Wade Simoneaux talk about upcoming games for the Bulldogs on the “Inside Tech Baseball” show.
The show will be broadcast via Ruston’s ESPN 97.7-FM station from 6-7 p.m. Hosting the show with Simoneaux will be veteran Tech play-by-play announcer Dave Nitz.

Mind-blowing: Wild turkey ‘slam’

It was nine years ago this month when a far-fetched dream of mine became reality as I squeezed the trigger on a Merriam’s gobbler in the Badlands of South Dakota. The 21 pound gobbler completed my quest for a coveted Grand Slam. The fans of an Eastern, Rio Grande, Osceola and Merriam’s along with a plaque from the National Wild Turkey Federation commemorating the event grace my office wall.

Harris duo wins Fishers of Men tourney

Members of the North Central Louisiana Division of the Fishers of Men National Tournament Trail took to the waters recently with their third tournament of the season held on Caney Lake.
A pre-tournament meeting was held in which anglers along with tournament staff and family members had the opportunity to hear an inspiring message presented by fellow angler John Ross.
