Coates, Plummer unite in matrimony

Anna Katherine Coates and Robert Casey Plummer, both of Ruston, recently exchanged wedding vows in a 2 p.m. ceremony on Saturday at the First Baptist Church of Ruston. The double- ring ceremony was officiated by the Rev. Brian Mercer.

Anna is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John Scott Coates, of Ruston. She is the granddaughter of Sybil Leachman, of Ruston, John Leroy Coates, of Sulphur the late Billy Leachman and the late Maydell Coates.

Celebrate 200 years of a unique culture thriving

Exactly 200 years ago today, our beautiful, culture-rich land became a part of the United States of America.
Today marks Louisiana’s bicentennial birthday, and a birthday celebration to remember is scheduled to take place at the State Capitol Building in Baton Rouge.
Also, according to www.louisianabicentennial2012.com, the Louisiana Hospital Association and the state bicentennial commission will hand out commemorative bicentennial medals and certificates to approximately 200 babies today commemorating that they were born on the state’s 200th birthday.

With that simple phrase, I became guilty, like so many others, of voting for a politician based on what he said rather than studying his track record. I understood his sentiment.

Tech nearing C-USA hookup?

Report says school predicted as one of four new members

Any day or week now, Louisiana Tech University could be getting the phone call they have been wanting to hear regarding its athletics program.
The caller at the other end might start the conversation out this way: “Would you like to be a member of our conference?”
That conference is the one with the letters C-USA and according to both the CBSSports.com website and the Houston Chronicle, Tech is projected as one of four new schools being added on to the membership roll starting with the 2013 season.

Four ’Dogs ink free agent pacts

Cole, Creer, Broha, Carter will get chance to play in NFL

Overlooked in the recent three-day draft, former Louisiana Tech University stars Adrien Cole and Lennon Creer will get their chance to play in the NFL after all.
So will two of their ex-Bulldogs’ teammates.
Linebacker Cole and running back Creer have been signed as free agents by the Chicago Bears and Washington Redskins, respectively.
Also heading into training camps later this summer with a chance to play at the game’s ultimate level will be former Tech standouts Matt Broha at defensive end with the New York Giants and defensive back Terry Carter with the Pittsburgh Steelers.

G-Men sweep TSU

GRAMBLING — Grambling State University (20-21, 12-9) waltzed to a 22-6 victory Sunday to complete a three-game Southwestern Athletic Conference sweep over Texas Southern University (23-23, 8-15) at Wilbert Ellis Park.
The Tigers were 10-9 and 6-2 winners in a doubleheader Saturday.

Parish trio places in Top 25

Moss, Haddox, Newton finish high at junior tourney

Matthew Moss of Choudrant placed in the Top 20 and Ruston’s Mitchell Haddox and Brandon Newton finished in the Top 25 at the annual Under Armour/Vicky Hurst golf championships that concluded at the Squire Creek Golf and Country Club course Sunday.
Moss had a scorecard reading 76-77-153 and shared the No. 20 slot with five other players.
Haddox ended with a 72-82-154 and Newton had a 74-80-154 to place in the No. 23 slot with two other golfers. In the girls’ division, Ruston’s Isabella Vigna closed out with a score of 100-96-196.

Shawn Lee Henderson

Graveside services for Shawn Lee Henderson, age 41 of Ruston are scheduled for 3:00 PM, Tuesday, May 1, 2012 at Sibley Cemetery near Choudrant. Pastor Chris Witt will officiate under the direction of Owens Memorial Chapel Funeral Home of Ruston.

Shawn was born on June 6, 1970 in Lafayette to Travis and Rita Henderson. His long battle with illness ended April 28, 2012 in Ruston as he entered into the waiting arms of his Lord and Savior. He was surrounded by people who loved him. Shawn was preceded in death by his mother, Rita Wilcox Henderson.

Funeral services for Abe Attrep, age 79, of Ruston will be 11:00 A.M. Tuesday, May 1, 2012 at the Episcopal Church of the Redeemer in Ruston with Father Bill Easterling officiating the service. Interment immediately following at Pines Memorial Gardens under the direction of Kilpatrick Funeral Home of Ruston. Visitation will be prior to the church service at 9:30 A.M. at the church.

Funeral services for Patricia Carmichael Edmiston, age 74, of Ruston, LA will be 10:00 A.M. Wednesday, May 2, 2012 at Kilpatrick Funeral Home Chapel in Ruston, LA. Officiating the service will be Dr. Michael Hawley. Interment will follow in Forest Lawn Cemetery under the direction of Kilpatrick Funeral Home of Ruston. Visitation will be Tuesday, May 1, 2012 from 5:00 PM until 7:00 PM at Kilpatrick Funeral Home in Ruston.
