Sisters begin their ‘American Dream’

It might have been double the pressure, but now it’s double well-done for twin s
isters Maegan and Mallory Watson, who graduated together Saturday — both with 4.0 GPAs.
The sisters, 21, from Luling, said they took all their courses together to have a built-in study partner, and it seems to have paid off. Both Watsons graduated with bachelors’ degrees in animal science, pre-veterinary medicine concentration.

Grambling agrees on new aerators

Town moves closer to achieving treatment plant compliance

Grambling has been dealing with problems at their wastewater treatment plant since the purchase of new aerators in 2010, but town officials hoped to take the first, and biggest, step toward solving that problem at their monthly town council meeting Thursday night.
The five-member council voted unanimously at the meeting to have Grambling enter into a lease-purchase agreement for two new aerators to go in at the wastewater treatment plant.

LPSB to meet Tuesday

Several items will be on the agenda for the 6 p.m. Tuesday meeting of the Lincoln Parish School Board.
The building and grounds committee, headed up by District 7 representative Trott Hunt, will discuss the naming of the athletic facilities at Ruston High School at 5:30 p.m. Then they will present their findings at the regular meeting.
The board will also consider the bids from companies hoping to get the contract to build the new agriculture shop and New Tech building on Ruston High’s campus, which is paid for by a millage extension that Ruston voters approved in April 2011.

Sixth annual Furry Fun Walk set

Ruston Parks and Recreation Department is preparing to host the Furry Fun Walk for the sixth straight year.
The free event is set for 9:30 a.m. March 17. The community is encouraged to come out, with their dog on a leash, for a stroll through one of the city’s 11 parks, Cook Park.

CASA seeks photographers for third annual gallery

Court Appointed Special Advocates of Northeast Louisiana is currently accepting submissions from local professional and amateur photographers for the third Annual “45 Gallery.” The gallery will feature photos honoring the 45 children in Louisiana who died last year due to abuse or neglect. “The 45 Gallery” will be displayed at Aubrey Hall on Art Alley during the Downtown Gallery Crawl from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. on April 5.

Appleby, Gaskins receive WAC honors

Louisiana Tech University senior Trevor Gaskins and freshman Raheem Appleby garnered honors from the Western Athletic Conference, as the postseason awards were announced today.
Appleby was selected as the conference’s Freshman of the Year, becoming the first Bulldog since Paul Millsap in 2004 to earn the award. Appleby was also named to the second team all-WAC and all-Newcomer teams.
He averaged 13.8 points per game and scored a season-high 30 points at New Mexico State on Feb. 4.

Yepson: big day at the plate

Lauren Yepson was a pitcher’s nightmare at the Cedar Creek High School softball tournament this past weekend.
The returning Louisiana Sports Writers Association first team Class 1A All-State player for the Lady Cougars hit three home runs, including a grand slammer, to help power her team to wins over Forest and Franklin Parish.
Yepson had a home run, two runs batted in, a single and run scored in an 8-3 win over Forest.
