Muir, Bumgarner named for DSA awards

Veteran sportswriters earn state’s highest journalism award

NATCHITOCHES — Two very influential figures in the coverage of sports across Louisiana for decades, Baton Rouge sports editor Butch Muir and New Orleans sportswriter Bill Bumgarner, are the winners of the 2012 Distinguished Service Award in Sports Journalism from the Louisiana Sports Writers Association.
Muir will end a 49-year career this spring when he retires after 32 years in charge of the Advocate’s sports section. Bumgarner is in year No. 40 as an acclaimed New Orleans sportswriter, and is regarded as one of the state’s foremost experts on high school sports.
The Distinguished Service Award in Sports Journalism is the most prestigious honor offered to sports media in the state.

Donohoe to speak at Techsters’ fete

Louisiana Tech University alum and longtime NCAA Division I women’s basketball administrator Sue Donohoe will be the featured speaker at the Lady Techster Appreciation Banquet on April 20.
The annual banquet will be held at the Tech Student Center starting at 6:30 p.m. (doors open at 6 p.m.). Tickets are $20 per person and $240 for a table of eight.

Eddy, Parker key RJHS girls to track victory

Ebenae Eddy and Amari Parker had two first places each to lead the Ruston Junior High School girls’ track and field team to a recent championship at Monroe Ouachita Christian.
Eddy won the mile at 6:06 and the 400-meter dash at 1:07, while Parker was tops for the triple jump at 28-2 and the long jump at 14-3.5.

Hard water fishing not for wimps

I’m not sure of the pH reading of the water I fish here in Louisiana; it could be alkaline or acidic; “soft” or “hard”. I had my first experience a few weeks ago of trying my hand at real “hard” water fishing on the Bay of Green Bay in Door County Wisconsin. I went ice fishing.
My trip to the tundra was arranged by Geiger and Associates public relations firm to visit and sample all that Door County had to offer. Among the morsels dangled was the chance to try ice fishing and I was like the proverbial horse whinnying after the carrot. Ice fishing has been on my bucket list for awhile and when the offer came, I jumped at it.
