Stone explains reasons for proposed new tax

Lincoln Parish voters next month will be faced with two funding proposals to support the sheriff’s office — a property tax renewal for a period of 10 years and a permanent quarter-cent sales tax.
“We feel like both of these taxes are critical to the ongoing services we provide the people,” Sheriff Mike Stone said. “We really are asking the people to please vote twice for this. Maybe Patricia Cage-Bibbs is just getting started with this passion she has for coaching basketball.
Well, maybe that’s not entirely accurate, either, because, well, she’s been doing this for nearly 30 years now.
But when you’re having fun and being successful, the time definitely zips by.
And for the Choudrant native and graduate of Grambling State University, there’s been a whole lot of fun and lots of success.
Earlier this week, she joined an exclusive group when she captured lifetime victory No. 500.

Roll the calender back to 1961, a year in which the famed Mickey Mantle-Roger Maris tandem gave fans of the New York Yankees and major league baseball a thrill a day with their pursuit of Babe Ruth’s home run record.
But on a local, regional and state level, there was another historic moment in the sports world.
That was the inaugural year of what is now known as the LHSAA’s championship tournament in basketball.

022112 BASS WINNERS c.jpg

On a recent February morning, it was cold and dreary weather conditions at Ludwig Brothers Marine on Lake D’Arbonne.
A strong cold front had passed through the area earlier and brought with it rain and dropping temperatures.
With the thermometer reading 33 degrees and a 15-mile per hour wind out of the north producing a wind chill factor of 27 degrees, it wasn’t a very good morning to be having a bass tournament.
