Kane talks to students

Ruston High School’s auditorium was the scene for a grand sight Wednesday morning, when Louisiana Poet Laureate Julie Kane showed up to read a few of her poems and talk to the students about the art itself.
Kane was a guest Tuesday night at George T. Madison Hall on Louisiana Tech University’s campus, where she recited her poetry as well, as part of the university’s Academic Excellence Week, and North Central Louisiana Arts Council education coordinator Jessica Slaughter said she was glad to be able to get Kane at RHS.

CHS mock crash

Choudrant High School’s Student Council, local law officials and firefighters came together on Tuesday to participate in a mock crash sponsored by the Louisiana Highway Safety Commission.
The mock crash, a very realistic portrayal of what can happen when someone drinks and drives, was held for the students of Choudrant High School whose prom is Saturday.
“The purpose is to make students aware of what can happen on a prom night,” said Tommy Grafton, project director for the North Central Alliance Partners in Prevention. “We want to remind students not to drink on a special night.”

Board opposes new tax, backs renewals

The Ruston-Lincoln Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors has voted to oppose the new quarter-cent sales tax being proposed by the Lincoln Parish Sheriff’s Office.
The business leaders say while they understand the importance of good law enforcement, now is not the time for a new tax.
“During these economic times, we thought this was not a good time to be taxing people further,” Chamber President Scott Terry said.

Gray discusses black women, media at local library event

As students poured into the Lincoln Parish Library Events Center earlier this month to receive extra credit or on assignment for class, they quickly became engaged by the lecture they were attending.
LaGuana K. Gray, a professor at the University of Texas at San Antonio presented research in a lecture titled “We Get It! No One Wants Us!: Black Women and the Media-Driven Marriage Crisis,” at the Lincoln Parish Library Events Center.
The lecture was part of the Louisiana Tech University History Department’s Black History Month and Women’s History Month events, which were co-sponsored by the Lincoln Parish Library.

Girl Scouts donate to DART

Girl Scout Louisiana Pines to the Gulf Troop 677 of Simsboro donated more than three cases of cookies to the Domestic Abuse Resistance Team.
Troop 677 would like to thank everyone who donated a box of cookies to their Gift of Caring Group this year.

Ashram held in Monroe
