It is no secret that when the temperature begins to climb so does the price of gas. The government gives a variety of explanations as to why the cost of gasoline rises, blaming it on everything from there being an oil shortage or the cost of a barrel of oil has risen.

Layoff talk sidestepped in outsourcing

Private companies are doing more and more of the work once performed by state employees, and Gov. Bobby Jindal is proposing new rounds of privatization in his latest budget proposal. The shift has forced thousands of people from their jobs, a consequence the Jindal administration tends to gloss over as it touts the lowest number of state workers in decades.

Help child care about problems

Parents tell me their daughter is intelligent and did well in school up until the seventh grade, at which time she stopped doing the required work and her grades, consequently, went down the proverbial tube.
My response: “Who cares?”
Parents tell me their 8-year-old son still has four or five “accidents” per week in his clothing. The child’s pediatrician has determined that there is no physical problem (in which case, these stinky events are more accurately called “on purposes” or “lazies”).

Speaker explores a different sort of resistance

Earlier this month the Lincoln Parish Library hosted a Black History Month speaker.
Louisiana Tech professor David Anderson introduced the speaker Cheryl Mango-Ambrose, Master of Arts candidate at Tech. Anderson is directing Black History Month events for the history department at Tech. Anderson said the reason we have Black History Month is that “American history had a deficit. Black scholars established Black History Month to say we weren’t telling the entire story of American history. ”

Tech, A.E. Phillips project yields art

Roots have taken form, and A.E. Phillips Laboratory School and Louisiana Tech University’s School of Art’s collaboration project to bring together students from the two schools is complete.
Jes Schrom, an assistant professor of photography, and Maggie Boudreaux, an A.E.P. teacher, along with their students, created a work of art that is viewable on Mayfield Street. Trees, vines and a landscape were created on the A.E.P. side, and the students also created a tree beside the School of Art.
