A memorial service for Mr. Howard Otis Ulmer, Jr., age 80 of Ruston, will be held at 10:00 AM Tuesday, February 28, 2012 at the Antioch United Methodist Church near Ruston. Rev. Ann Olivia Hartwick

Memorial services for Ann Olivia Hartwick, 63, of Ruston will be 11:00AM Tuesday February 28, 2012 at Culbertson Baptist Church with Bro. “Tuck” Roberts & Steven Wade officiating.

Ann Olivia Hartwick went to her heavenly home on Saturday February 25, 2012. She was a member of Emmanuel Baptist Church in Ruston and a registered nurse. She was a graduate of Northwestern State College. She began her nursing career in the VA hospitals in Shreveport, Atlanta and Dallas.

She is preceded in death by her father Robert O. Hartwick.

Survivors include her mother Edwina Hartwick of Darbonne

While most people reserve their weekends for relaxing, getting some work around the house done or shopping, many residents like Amanda Reynolds decided to use their weekend working toward a better smile.
Reynolds and more than 100 other area residents gathered in the parking lot of Peach Tree Dental starting Friday night to take part in the fifth annual Dentistry from the Heart event, in which people without dental insurance are given the choice between a free tooth filling, tooth extraction or teeth cleaning.

Early voting for presidential primary begins March 10

Registered Republicans and Democrats in Lincoln Parish will have an opportunity to choose the presidential candidate of their choice in the Presidential Preference Primary on March 24.
Early voting is set from 8:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. March 10-17 — with the exception of Sunday — on the ground floor of the Lincoln Parish Courthouse on the Louisiana Avenue side.
Lincoln Parish Registrar of Voters Dianna Stone said as of Feb. 19, there were 12,041 registered Democrats and 8,371 registered Republicans in Lincoln Parish. Additionally, there are 5,947 parish residents registered in other parties or no party, who will not be qualified to vote in this election, but will qualify to vote in the November General Presidential Election.
Candidates on the ballot for the Democratic Party include “Bob” Ely, Barack Obama, Darcy G. Richardson and John Wolfe. Candidates on the ballot for the Republican Party include Michele Bachmann, Randy Crow, Newt Gingrich, Jon Huntsman, Ron Paul, Rick Perry, Charles “Buddy” Roemer, Mitt Romney and Rick Santorum.

Crowe recalls parish integration

When current Ruston High School Assistant Principal David Crowe started high school, he completed his first two years at Lincoln Parish High School, which at the time consisted of an all African-American student body, but soon found himself in the midst of a major change.
Starting in his junior year, Crowe and the rest of his classmates found themselves walking new halls, so to speak, this time at the newly integrated Ruston High School.
“We were transported to RHS at the beginning of my junior year. It was the 1969-70 school year,” he said.
