Home destroyed, no injuries reported

A heat lamp used to battle the cold temperatures is suspected in the fire that destroyed a home on Rough Edge Road on Wednesday afternoon.

Eric Brazzel, public education officer for the Ruston Fire Department, said that at approximately 3:45 p.m. Wednesday, firefighters responded to a structure fire at 300 Rough Edge Road to find flames raging from the roof of a two-story home.

Brazzel said Choudrant, Ruston and Lincoln Parish Fire Departments all responded and coordinated their efforts to extinguish the fire.

No injuries were reported as a result of the fire.

Winter Fest in Ruston

Although Ruston Main Street’s Winter Fest 2012 is already under way, there are still a few activities left during this holiday season.
“There are a number of activities happening in Downtown Ruston during the month of December,” said Kristi Lumpkin, City of Ruston economic development administrator. “This is a great time to bring the kids to meet Santa, see a Christmas play or movie, hear local school choirs perform Christmas songs or catch throws from the parade.”

RFD seeks car arson suspect

BThe Ruston Fire Department is asking for information about a car arson that happened near the 2300 block of Rusty Lane at approximately 3:15 a.m. today. According to reports, a maroon-colored 2005 Chevrolet Impala was set on a fire after a brick was thrown into the back glass. There was substantial damage done to the interior of the vehicle.

Drawdown nearing end

The Bayou D’Arbonne Watershed District Lake Commission has reached an agreement on when the spillway gate will be close — officially ending the drawdown for this year.
Lake commission president Noel James said the committee has agreed upon closing the gate Dec. 28 and encourages residents who still need work done on private piers, docks and boat ramps to complete these projects as soon as possible.

Pike house cleared to begin rebuilding

The City of Ruston’s Board of Adjustment met for the first time in five years last week to approve a variance request.
After voting to OK the minutes from their last meeting — Dec. 19, 2007 — board members considered a request from the Pi Kappa Alpha House Corp. that was first approved by the City Zoning Commission.

DHS, GMS place in Christmas food drive

The 12th Annual KTVE-KARD Christmas Cheer Food Drive was a great success with 77,987 total pounds of food collected from 51 area schools that competed for cash prizes.
Pepsi and Frito-Lay delivered the food to the Food Bank of Northeast Louisiana for distribution to those in need this holiday season. Area Brookshire’s and Super 1 Foods stores awarded the food bank a $3,252 check from customer donations, plus donated 12,732 pounds of food.

FBC Celebration Choir presents Christmas musical

First Baptist Church’s Celebration Choir will present its Christmas Musical at 6 p.m. Sunday at 200 S. Trenton St. to area residents.
Under the direction of Wayne Bridges, more than 85 participants, including about 30 children, and featuring a “Nativity Presentation” will perform,“The Gift of Christmas,” by Prism Music, Inc.

Sirens sound like good plan

Ruston is now a little better prepared for emergencies.
After running a few tests this month, it appears the city’s new Outdoor Audible Emergency Warning System is in working order.
Made up of 13 sirens spread out across the city, the system is designed to alert residents in the event of weather-related issues, chemical spills or other emergencies.

Lending a helping hand for Christmas

Every year as Christmas approaches, people begin to have mixed feelings. For many, there is a feeling of worry and guilt. Especially with the uncertainty of our financial situation looming over the fiscal year. Where are those feelings of comfort and joy? Where are those feelings of love that comes from the anticipation of having the opportunity to have uninterrupted time spent together with family and friends? There is also a desire to spend the holidays in celebration based upon their religion.
