Varying income isn’t a worry only for entrepreneurs and the self-employed. Workers who leave the workforce to care for a family member or recover from serious illness can also face plenty of uncertainty in their cash flow. And in the last few years, even employees who had enjoyed steady paychecks and annual increases have seen their earnings change because of layoffs, wage freezes and enforced cutbacks on hours.

Memorial Gym changes bring back memories

It’s still my favorite all-time basketball facility.
Maybe it’s because I’ve got so many fond memories of the place.
Maybe it’s because my grandfather, the late C.C. Davis of Ruston, served as its contractor and maybe it’s because I used to trail along with him when he would go check on its progress.
Yes, it’s mostly nostalgia associated with my love of Memorial Gymnasium.
Nothing wrong with that.

In terms of football “art,” Louisiana Tech University’s homecoming victory over the University of Texas-San Antonio on Saturday afternoon wouldn’t have been found in the Picasso gallery.
Pretty it wasn’t.
But still, the Top 25 ranked Bulldogs (8-0, 3-0) walked off of the Joe Aillet Stadium FieldTurf with a 51-27 Western Athletic Conference win in their first-ever game against the Roadrunners (5-4, 1-3).

Grambling tripped by JSU

GRAMBLING — Jackson State’s starting quarterback Clayton Moore said that his team preached before the game that Grambling was the team to beat.
And JSU did just that at Eddie G. Robinson on Saturday afternoon. They beat Grambling — thoroughly — with a final score of 53-17.
“This was a personal game,” said Moore, who completed 12 of 18 passes for 257 yards and two touchdowns.

GSU professor honored in Michigan

Singh inducted into the School of Criminal Justice Wall of Fame

Mahendra Singh wants teachers to instruct their students without favoritism and prejudice.
“Teach each and every student with respect, love and maximum ability, irrespective of students’ skills, to make them aspire to the highest goal in their life,” Singh appealed to his fellow professors at Grambling State University and other higher education institutions.
Singh is the department head and a professor in the university’s Department of Criminal Justice in the College of Professional Studies.

Jindal announces Sparta district appointments

Gov. Bobby Jindal recently announced appointments to the Sparta Groundwater Conservation District.
The Sparta Groundwater Conservation District serves to study and survey the groundwater resources in the district regarding issues such as conservation, land surface subsidence and groundwater quality degradation. The board advises the commissioner of conservation based on their findings.
