Commission to review zoning code changes

There will be a special meeting of the Ruston Zoning Commission at 5:30 p.m. Monday.
On the agenda is a public hearing to review and consider action for the proposed amendments to the Ruston Zoning Code.
City Zoning Administrator Jim Hays said for anyone who would like to comment, there will be sign-up sheets when they walk in the door. Speaking times are limited to three minutes.
The meeting will be in the courtroom on the second floor of City Hall, located at 401 N. Trenton St.

Missing man found

A Ruston man reported missing last month has been located in Minneapolis.
Police sought tips in the disappearance of William Michael Lewis, 58, who was last seen on Sept. 20, possibly boarding a Greyhound bus in Ruston.
Investigators have not been able to verify that it was actually Lewis boarding the bus.
According to Ruston Police Department Public Information Officer Tim Parker, investigators worked with the Minneapolis Police Department and were able to ascertain Lewis’ location after working on several leads.

GSU West Campus renamed

Change honors university’s former president R.W.E. Jones

Grambling State University has changed the name of recently acquired property formally known as Grambling State University West Campus.
In honor of the university’s longest serving president, R.W.E. Jones, effective Tuesday the university’s 157- acre west campus is called Grambling State University West Campus: R.W.E Jones Annex. The naming was approved by the University of Louisiana System Board of Supervisors at its monthly meeting Tuesday morning.

Tech Alumni Awards Luncheon

Eight to be honored

Louisiana Tech University’s annual Alumni Awards Luncheon will be held at noon Nov. 2 in the Louisiana Tech Student Center as part of this year’s Homecoming festivities.
Tickets are $25 per person or $200 for a reserved table of eight. Reserved parking will be available in the Ropp Center parking lot or on Adams Boulevard at West Arizona.
The event will honor seven Tech alumni and will also recognize Ruston mayor Dan Hollingsworth, who will be presented with the Arlis Scogin Distinguished Service Award, an honor bestowed on non-Tech graduates who have been of great service to the university.

New lane to aid traffic flow

A group of local and state elected officials gathered by the side of Georgia Avenue on Wednesday to celebrate the completion of a road-widening project.
The portion of Georgia Avenue that runs between Trenton and Vienna streets now has a turning lane, which is expected to help alleviate traffic congestion.

Chancie Neal to give free concert

The community is invited to a free concert featuring country singer/songwriter Chancie Neal on Saturday.
Beehive Outlet, located at 213 N. Service Road, is the site for the event, which is set from 7:30-9:30 p.m., with the Nashville recording artist to sign autographs afterwards.
Some of Chancie’s hits include “Girl with a Guitar,” “Silverado” and “My Louisiana.”

Classes welcome parents, grandparents to school

Kindergarten
Fall is in the air in the Glen View kindergarten classes as we have enjoyed celebrating Johnny Appleseed with centers, learning about fire safety with a visit from the fire truck and are looking forward to our field trip to Papa Simpson’s Farm. The children are excited about having the opportunity to feed and learn about many animals, milk a cow and pick a pumpkin from the pumpkin patch. This trip is always a favorite.

ULS offers collaborative, online leadership degree

As early as February 2013, the University of Louisiana System institutions will begin accepting applications for the Bachelor of Arts in organizational leadership, a 100 percent online degree offered jointly by nine public universities. The accelerated degree completion program is designed for adults who dropped out of college.

Tech associate media director arrested

Patrick Walsh, an associate media relations director with the Louisiana Tech University Communications Department, was arrested in the early hours this morning for domestic abuse battery, a misdemeanor charge.

Festival fundraiser set for Friday

Ruston Clinic Company Physicians have partnered with the parent group at Ruston Elementary School to help provide a fundraising event that will be held on Friday. The physicians group will provide 250 hot dogs and all the trimmings for the Fall Festival event set from 5:30-7 p.m. at RES. This is a family event for RES and Hillcrest Elementary families.
