If you’re of a certain age, the new year means you’re that much closer to a day you may have anticipated with a combination of humor and resignation — specifically, the day you’re eligible for Social Security.
But just because you can take Social Security, it doesn’t mean you must take it. So, should you?
Before we get to that question, let’s review the basic rules governing Social Security payments.

Call to Entries for ADDY competition announced

The Ad Club of Northeast Louisiana has announced their Call to Entries for the 2012 ADDY® Awards. The Northeast Louisiana ADDY Awards competition is open to professional and student entrants in Monroe, Ruston and the surrounding areas.
“There is so much creative talent in the Northeast Louisiana area,” said Sheila Snow, immediate past president of the Ad Club. “The Addy Awards is a chance to both acknowledge and celebrate that talent.”
The Call for Entries will began Friday, but all entries must be received by Jan. 27.

Eating healthy in the New Year

At the start of 2012, Janet Wilson like many other Ruston residents set a few New Year’s resolutions she wishes to accomplish.
Ideas of “I want to do this and I want to do that” crossed Janet’s mind, but she ultimately decided on three things she hoped to do.
“First I want to grow in my relationship with Christ,” she began. “Secondly I want to think more about other people than I do myself and lastly, I want to work on my physical health.”
For many, those may seem like easy tasks to do, but Janet said she is going to strive for each of them every day.

Gloriana to perform

Gloriana, whose new single “(Kissed You) Good Night” is currently climbing the country charts, will perform at 3 Docs Brew House on Thursday.
Gloriana released their debut self-titled album in 2009 and quickly became the best-selling debut country act, winning the 2009 fan voted American Music Award for Breakthrough Artist. The album, Gloriana, spawned the Gold-certified hit single “Wild At Heart” and led to two years on the road as Taylor Swift’s opening act on her Fearless Tour where they performed in front of millions worldwide.

Missed opportunities, childish instincts revealed

I was thinking of the time when I was 13, sitting on the tall steps of our girls’ dormitory at Acadia Baptist Academy on the prairie out from Church Point, in south Louisiana, with my friends as we projected our futures.
I announced that I planned to be very, very old; possibly living to be 79, which meant I would still be alive at the turn of the 20th century, 2000. They laughed, which was fine, since I said it to be funny. That year was 1934.

“Living in the Spirit” class on Sunday at 9:45 a.m. will help you understand the Holy Spirit’s role in your life. Children’s Church at 10:45 a.m. will teach your children to know God and the Bible. Nursery up through age 3 provided on Sundays at 10:45 a.m. and by request on Sunday night and Wednesday at 6 p.m.
