Each year Mariam Stone is required to do at least one thing, that is to make her Amish Friendship Bread.
“It’s the sheriff’s favorite,” she said. “When I told him I was (making the bread) he even told me he couldn’t remember the last time he had it.”
Mariam, wife of Lincoln Parish Sheriff Mike Stone, added that even though the recipe can be made in a low-fat way, most people prefer it normal.

Passions developed throughout lifetime

I told you last week about the young lady, Debbie O’Neal, in our church who had been fighting a losing battle with cancer for about two years. The pastor’s wife and I were to take dinner to the little family that night.
About 4 p.m. Debbie’s husband, Scott, called and said she was having a bad day and probably didn’t need visitors, so the preacher’s wife, Judy, offered to deliver the food. I didn’t go.
Well, about 2 a.m., Debbie died. They have two little boys ages 10 and 12.

COES announces 2012 Distinguished Alumni

Louisiana Tech University’s College of Engineering and Science announces the selection of its 2012 Distinguished Alumni.
The honorees are selected annually from each program or discipline within the College for their professional accomplishments in engineering and science as well as serving as outstanding ambassadors for Louisiana Tech University.

Scholarship fundraiser set

Louisiana Tech’s department of music will host the fourth annual scholarship fundraiser event, a “Winter Wonderland” concert, Tuesday at Trinity United Methodist Church, located at 1000 Woodward Ave.
The event will include performances by music faculty and students, a magic show by award-winning magician Tim Pardue, a silent auction and refreshments.

Surprise birthday party held

GRAMBLING — Friends and family from near and far recently gathered together for an evening of elegance and nostalgia to celebrate the 60th birthday of Monroe businessman and Ruston native Alton R. Brooks.
The surprise birthday soirée was hosted by the guest of honor's daughters, Adrienne Brooks Ogbevire and Amie R. Brooks, of Houston, Texas, and Ashley R. Brooks, of Atlanta, Ga. The celebration took place at Legends Sports Bar in Grambling.

Parish set to kick off Relay event

The 2012 Lincoln Parish Relay for Life Kickoff is set for Thursday at the Ruston Lincoln Visitors Center at 6 p.m. The event begins the American Cancer Society’s efforts to raise money locally to support cancer research and provide services to those battling cancer.
Relay For Life is an event that helps communities across the globe celebrate the lives of people who have battled cancer, remember loved ones lost and fight back against the disease.
The 2012 Lincoln Parish Relay for Life will take place on April 20 at Ruston High School track.

Country fun at Dixie

The Dixie Center for the Arts is kicking 2012 off with a bang as they welcome their first performer of the New Year.
Two-time Grammy award winner Pam Tillis is set for an acoustic performance at the theater at 7 p.m. Thursday.
Tickets for the event are $20 or by Dixie Season Memberships, and can be purchased at the Dixie Box Office Wednesday through Friday at 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Tickets can also be purchased at the door the night of the show.

Arrest made in GSU robbery

A new arrest has been made in the Grambling State University police investigaion of an alleged armed robbery of an illegal gambling game taking place in one of the dormitories in early December.
The alleged robbers reportedly stole approximately $5,000.
Tremond Travis Jackson, 20, of 2940 Mansfield Ave., New Orleans, was arrested Thursday at the Orleans Parish Sheriff Jail.

Airport approach faces obstructions

Trees to be cut down or topped to fix problem

The Ruston Airport Authority Commission met Jan. 12 to discuss some important issues regarding planes landing at the local facility.
Commission Chairman Jay Robbins said the glide slope approach to the airport has obstructions according to officials with the Federal Aviation Administration.
Robbins said when planes approach the airport under a glide approach, the airport has lights on that help them approach the runway more safely.
