From colleges to preps, parish sparkled on gridiron

In the state where the sport is clearly king, Lincoln Parish wore the crown proudly during the year of 2011.
If any one part of the athletic landscape in the area dominated much of the headlines over the past dozen months, it was on the gridiron.
There, you had both parish collegiate teams winning conference titles and compiling impressive victory streaks.
Or move over to the prep division and both of the city’s high schools won no fewer than eight games and participated in the state playoffs.

Dubach, New Living Word gain titles

New Living Word School’s boys and Dubach High’s girls captured championships in their divisions at the recent basketball tournament hosted by NLWS of Ruston.
In the boys’ title game, NLWS was a 94-52 winner over Gibsland-Coleman.
Dubach’s girls improved to a 19-1 record and gained the championship by halting Summerfield 46-35.
Javier Roper (14), Lee Mason (21), Ty Mason (23), Xavious Williams (eight) and Tracy Hampton (24) were the top scorers for the balanced New Living Word team.

Funeral services will be held for Joe Michael, 88, at the St. Margaret’s Catholic Church in Homer on Monday, January 1, 2012, at 11 a.m. with Father Mark Franklin officiating. Interment will follow at Arlington cemetery. Visitation will begin at 9:30 a.m. at St. Margaret’s.

A graveside service for Mr. Howell R. “Dale” Tatum, Jr. age 62 of Ruston, will be held at 2:00 PM Sunday, January 1, 2012 at Choudrant Memorial Cemetery in Choudrant.  Rev. Jerry Whitman will officiate the service.  The service is under the direction of Owens Memorial Chapel Funeral Home of Ruston.
