Jan. 16 was a United States Federal Holiday celebrating the life of the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Also, since 1976, every United States president has officially designated the month of February as Black History Month. Both of these, the past holiday and the designation of the upcoming month, caused me to begin thinking about Martin Luther King Jr. and what he lived for.

So linemen are usually the last ones to get recognized on a football team, huh?
That’s not the case for Ruston High School’s 2011 edition.
Of the four major awards handed out at the program’s annual postseason banquet at the Louisiana Tech University Student Center on Monday night, three of the recipients played in the interior for the Bearcats.

From the beginning of this National Football League season to the end, things have been pretty crazy.
Whether it was the upstart rookie Andy Dalton leading the Cincinnati Bengals to the playoffs in his first year, or the surprise injury of Peyton Manning that left the Indianapolis Colts a league worst 2-14, things just went a little differently in 2012.
One can’t also forget the first ever trip to and win in the playoffs for the Houston Texans. This was even sweeter for the Texans, because they made it to the playoffs on the arm of their third string rookie quarterback T.J. Yates.

Tech sets hoops’ promotions

‘White Out’, ‘Pack the House’ to be featured at TAC

There are two big promotions set for the Thomas Assembly Center and Louisiana Tech University’s basketball program during the next several weeks, beginning with a Thursday night men’s contest featuring the Bulldogs and Fresno State Universisty.
Tech will host its annual “White Out” promotion Thursday at 6 p.m. when first-year Head Coach Michael White and the Bulldogs host Fresno State in the yearly “Battle of the Bone — Hoop-style” on Karl Malone Court.

Sheron Gay Chellette

Funeral service for Mrs. Sheron Gay Chellette, age 54, of Ruston will be held at 10:00 AM Thursday, January 26, 2012 at Sharon Baptist Church in Kimbletown, LA. Officiating the service will be Rev. Bo Nicholson. Interment will follow at Sharon Cemetery under the direction of Kilpatrick Funeral Home in Ruston.

Mrs. Chellette was born February 24, 1957 and passed away January 22, 2012.
She was preceded in death by her granddaughter Elizabeth Glover.

State of district

Bell to discuss educational issues

Community members can pair a light lunch with a meaty presentation during the second annual State of the District education update this week.
The meeting, which is set for 11:30 a.m. Wednesday at the Lincoln Parish Library Events Center, will feature Lincoln Parish Schools Superintendent Danny Bell as the main speaker.
The annual report was developed to meet the goals of the Ruston 21 city improvement plan, which includes a section on ways to improve education in the area.

Although Ruston is not a city where immigrants come by leaps and bounds, many do, however, come with one thing in mind — education.
Louisiana Tech is one place that becomes the home for young adults from various countries across the world seeking to further their education.
On Tuesday young adults who are part of the English Language Students program are giving back to the community.

NAMI takes a look at schizophrenia

Everyone uses their mind to get through every second of the day. Unfortunately, according to the National Institute on Mental Health, as many as 2.2 million Americans can’t quite trust what their minds have to tell them.
Schizophrenia affects approximately 1.1 percent of the world population, and it will be the topic of discussion at this month’s meeting of the local chapter of the National Alliance for Mental Illness.
