Teach children important skills

One of the most important skills that a parent can teach a child is the ability to read. Teaching a child to read is not something that has to wait until he or she begins school; it is actually beneficial for a parent to begin reading to a child as soon as infancy to help develop language and reading skills. Parents do not need extensive training or to attend special programs.
According to The National Institute for Literacy, there are many things parents can do with their children at a young age to better prepare them for reading and writing at an older age. Some strategies they suggest parents use at home include:

Locals help teens find focus

Young adulthood, so far, seems like an exercise in “figuring it out.” Students are released from high school with the promise that they can do anything they put their minds to.
Unfortunately, most of us aren’t given much more direction than that. Oh, sure, we get advice from people here and there, but for the most part in our 20s, we have to make a great deal of decisions that will affect the quality of the rest of our lives.

GRAMBLING — Cliff Exama has left an indelible mark in the chapter dealing with the best linebackers ever to wear a Grambling State University uniform.
Yes, two straight seasons of All-American accolades and three consecutive years of being named to the All-Southwestern Athletic Conference squad should do it.
And as an added footnote, how about a national Defensive Player of the Year award?

Move to C-USA could prove great for Tech

When Louisiana Tech University first joined the Western Athletic Conference back in 2001, I remember thinking to myself, “This is going to be nice, finally being in a conference.”
And you can bet my thoughts were even more exuberant after one season in the conference when we took home the school’s first ever WAC championship.
Now, 10 years later, we have won the championship again, and it appears as if another conference move could be here for the red and blue.

Tech teams in Arkansas today

After a busy weekend of action, Louisiana Tech University’s diamond teams move into the state of Arkansas for games today.
The Bulldogs’ baseball team will play a doubleheader at the University of Arkansas-Pine Bluff beginning at 1 p.m., while the Lady Techsters’ softball squad has a single contest slated against the University of Central Arkansas in Conway starting at 5 p.m.

Choudrant, Creek girls advance

Choudrant High pulled off an upset on the road, and Cedar Creek High was a winner at home to give Lincoln Parish a pair of victories in the opening round of the girls’ 2012 Louisiana High School Athletic Association basketball playoffs on Monday night.
The Lady Aggies (15-24) shocked favored Glenmora 33-32 in Class B and the Lady Cougars (21-9) got past Opelousas Catholic 53-48 in Class 1A.
Two other parish teams were eliminated in the first round of the state playoffs. Ruston’s New Living Word (4-24) lost at Gibsland-Coleman 50-37 in Class C and Simsboro (13-21) was a 70-34 victim at Florien in Class B.
