Photo 1: On Thursday, nearly 4,000 local students, parents and community members gathered at the National Guard Armory to kick off the school year. Parents and students had access to educational and community booths that provided information about various events, services and educational opportunities available to their family. Tech professor to chair state psychology board

Tony Young, the Chester Ellis Endowed Professor in Education at Louisiana Tech University and manager of its Psychological Services Clinic, has been named Chair for the Louisiana State Board of Examiners of Psychologists.
The Louisiana State Board of Examiners of Psychologists is responsible for overseeing the practice of psychology in Louisiana. The agency reviews credentials and administers examinations to individuals applying for license to practice psychology in Louisiana, and also handles consumer complaints, and conducts disciplinary hearings to determine if a psychologist has acted contrary to the state’s practice regulations.

Striper bite is on at Claiborne

The Good Lord gave us a glorious sunrise, the glowing orb back-lighting a cloud in the eastern sky that looked for all the world like an angel in flight. I snapped a few photos as the sun slowly nibbled away the cloud bank. In a matter of minutes, the sun did what it has been doing for the past month, sending its searing heat down on us.
Kevin Beasley, Ruston photographer, and I were motoring slowly across the surface of Lake Claiborne, looking for the tell-tale surface splash of striped bass feeding on threadfin shad; they’d been doing that every morning for weeks. We searched and sweated in vain for nearly an hour without seeing a single feeding fish.

GSU players get a history lesson

Tigers learn about program’s legacy with museum tour

Grambling State University’s football players got an appreciation recently about the legendary Eddie Robinson.
Members of the 2011 Tigers’ squad took a visit to the museum on campus that was built in honor of Robinson, who served for 57 years as head coach and compiled a total of 408 wins and 17 Southwestern Athletic Conference championships.
Head Coach Doug Williams and his staff coordinated the tour of the museum for the entire team, who studied various displays on Robinson and his impact on the program from the early 1940s to late 1990s.

Louisiana Tech University will continue its presence in the social media world this year, as Bulldog and Lady Techster fans can keep up with all the latest on their favorite teams.
The Louisiana Tech media relations and marketing departments are joining forces to provide the most up-to-date and in-depth information through social media outlets such as Facebook, Twitter, LA Tech All-Access and CoverItLive.
LA Tech All-Access is a subscription based platform that Tech fans can access live video and audio streams of almost every Tech home sporting event and live audio streams of road football, men’s basketball, women’s basketball and selected baseball and softball games.

Newton honored with award

Brandon Newton (left) of the Cedar Creek High School golf team has been named as the recipient of the Jason Moss Award, presented annually in memory of the late Cougars’ player. Newton has been the individual state Class 1A Louisiana High School Athletic Association champion for the past three years and amoing the key leaders of team titles by Cedar Creek during the same period. Newton, who wsa presented with the award by Jason Moss Foundation representative Dusty McGehee (right), was the winner of this year’s Louisiana Tournament of Champions. He is a three-time Class 1A All-State member.

Lincoln Little League registration in progress

Lincoln Little League is gearing up for its 2012 season.
The Ruston diamond organization has announced various leagues for its 2012 campaign.
Registration is currently in progress and will continue until Sept. 5 or when enough rosters are filled for regular season games. Teams will be selected on Sept. 6.
Signup forms are available at The Locker Room or by logging on to lincolnlittleleague.org.
