Pickin' cotton and second-hand guitars

It was Saturday, and my fingers were a bloody mess. All week, after school, and since sunrise, I had been picking cotton for a neighbor. In spite of the hard rocky ground, stinging nettles, plus the pain an ol’ cotton burr could inflict on one’s fingers, I threw myself into that job with considerable gusto. And with good reason! Boots Roberson had promised to sell me his second-hand guitar for just $3, and according to my mental arithmetic I was almost there. In fact, I felt that by quitting time I’d have the necessary $3 and a little extra for a few strings.

Back-to-school supply drive launched

Children are still enjoying their summer break with family vacations, trips to local water parks, local lemonade stands, and playing in sports leagues and neighborhood parks. However, much-needed school supplies are being collected now by the Ruston Parks and Recreation Department.

Campbell joins top science teachers in Washington, D.C.

WASHINGTON, D.C. — The 10 teachers selected in March as part of Society for Science and the Public’s (SSP) 2011 class of the SSP Fellowship, including Chris Todd Campbell of Ruston, will attend the Fellows Institute this week in Washington, D.C. The Fellows Institute provides intensive training to teachers and enables each fellow to earn graduate level credit for their work.
