Peach dishes judged for flavor

Every year those young and old test out their culinary skills and vie for the title of grand champion of the annual Peach Cookery Contest.
With dishes such as Cloudy with a Chance of Peach Pie, Fresh Ruston-Peach Almond Tart and traditional Peach Cobbler there is surely something to satisfy each judges’ fancy.
However, according to Kim Birch, coordinator of the event, judging is based on more than just taste.
“The judges decide who wins based on overall taste, appearance, texture, peach flavor and creativity,” she said.

Love spat leads to attempted flames?

Fire and police authorities are reportedly trying to locate a Monroe woman who is accused of attempting to set fire to a bed where another woman was sleeping.
Ruston Fire Department Public Education Officer Eric Brazzel said the incident happened about 5 a.m. Sunday and began with a dispute between the two women over a man.
The suspect, whose name is not being released at this time, reportedly entered the victim’s residence on Duque Drive in Ruston, where two other adults and a young child were at the time.

‘Joe’ big boost for Bulldogs’ grid program

Notes gathered during a pre-“Jam at the Joe” press conference held at the Guthrie Jarrell Room of the Wyly Athletic Center on Tuesday:
• While it’s a big deal for participating schools to be involved with the annual “Jam at the Joe” in late August, so it is for Louisiana Tech University,
In terms of recruiting possibilities, exposure for the football and athletics’ program and future enrollment, it’s an extra important event.

Bulldogs’ trio drafted

Roliard, Threlkeld, Jefferson go in Top 25 rounds

A trio of Louisiana Tech University players were chosen in the Top 30 rounds of the annual Major League Baseball draft on Tuesday.
Lefthanded pitcher Kyle Roliard was chosen with the overall pick No. 408 in round No. 13 by the Colorado Rockies.
Southpaw pitcher Mike Jefferson was chosen as the No. 662 overall pick and in round No. 22 by the Pittsburgh Pirates.
Third baseman Mark Threlkeld was selected as overall pick No. 756 in round No. 25 by the Kansas City Royals.

‘Jam at Joe’ to have third run

Even as the temperatures reached near triple digits, and the humidity was thicker than motor oil, football was in the “air” in Ruston Tuesday afternoon.
The “fall-like” mood can be attributed to a “Jam at the Joe” press conference heralding the third annual preseason gridiron extravaganza and set for Aug. 27 at Louisiana Tech University’s Aillet Stadium.
