2011 Diaper Derby revs up

Little racers crawl, toddle, ride to victories

The 28th annual Diaper Derby brought out a large crowd on Saturday as people came in from the 2011 Squire Creek Peach Festival Parade.
Parents, grandparents and siblings cheered on their favorite baby to see who would win the trophy for being the fastest.

About 600 lose power

For the second week in a row, hundreds of Ruston power customers were left in the dark.
This time, the duration of the outage was shorter, beginning shortly after 8 a.m. and lasting for about 20 minutes.
City of Ruston Power and Light Manager Darrell Caraway said about 600 customers in the downtown area lost power this morning after Circuit No. 5 — the same one as last week — was affected.

Extras wanted for teen drama

R-Squared Productions’ latest film “New Hope” is filming in Monroe. The teen basketball drama is shooting opening scenes at Neville High School until July. The fictional “New Hope” Tigers Basketball Team faces the equally fictional Rockmore Bearcats in the championship game. Ruston High School provided wardrobe for the film, and the real Ruston High School cheerleaders will be featured in the movie.

Miss Spirit of Ruston wins 48th annual pageant

MONROE (AP) — The fourth time turned out to be the charm for Hope Anderson, a Monroe resident who has been crowned Miss Louisiana 2011.
Anderson, who was named Miss Spirit of Ruston in 2010, received the honor late Saturday night at the 48th annual Miss Louisiana pageant at the W.L. “Jack” Howard Theatre in Monroe. Wearing a red dress, she waved to the crowd as she was crowned by predecessor Kelsi Crain and received a white sash.

Ruston Fire responds to 34 calls over weekend

The Ruston Fire Department responded to many calls over the Peach Festival weekend, from the normal medical call to major motor vehicle collisions. No structure fires were reported.
Starting Friday and ending Monday firefighters responded to a total of 34 emergency medical calls with the ambulances and 13 responses with the Rescue and Fire trucks for a total of 47 responses in all.

Peach Rodeo contest ties-down calf

A packed arena, including many children, on Saturday watched calf roping, bronc riding and other events at the 2011 Peach Festival Rodeo.
Cowboys and cowgirls came from all over the South to participate in the rodeo, which was held both Friday and Saturday evening at the North Louisiana Exhibition Center. In Tuesday’s edition of the Daily Leader, country music star Chancie Neal, who performed at the rodeo, will talk about her music.

Peach Art Exhibit winners announced

The North Central Louisiana Arts Council and exhibit chair Kathy Stone would like to announce the winners of its 24th annual Peach Festival Art Exhibit. They also want to thank the awards sponsors for their support.
Winners in each category were awarded $100 for first, $75 for second and $50 for third place.

Parents play the name game

For many expecting parents, deciding on a name for their unborn child can turn into World War III. However, there are precautions that can be taken to make deciding on a name fun.
Now at week 22 Slade and I have found out that we are having a baby boy. We happen to be one of those lucky couples who decided on a name fairly early on, and even though we may bounce other names off of one another we still fall back to the original name we picked.
Here is a tip to help make this important moment during the pregnancy easier and a little fun.

Annual festival success for all

As thousands of people swarmed downtown Ruston this past weekend for the 61st annual Squire Creek Louisiana Peach Festival, we should take the time to thank all those who made the weekend a success.
The Ruston-Lincoln Chamber of Commerce staff put in hours upon hours of time and energy to organize the festival to where everything went off without a hitch.
