Be responsible for the holidays

Fireworks and fun are just days away. But with the good times, danger lurks.
The Fourth of July is one of the deadliest holidays of the year in terms of alcohol-impaired-driving crashes.
Statistics gathered from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration over the past 25 years show nearly half of all deadly traffic crashes over each year’s July 4 holiday involved some level of alcohol.

Charles Douglas “Doug” Burt

A memorial service honoring the life of Charles Douglas “Doug” Burt, (61) will be held at the Kilpatrick Funeral Home in Ruston, LA. Visitation will be held on Thursday, June 30, from 5-8 p.m. and services on Friday, July 1 at 4:00 p.m. at the funeral home. Doug left this life for a much better life after a sudden illness. The Lord took him as he wished, sudden and painless. Born and raised in Shreveport, LA, Doug graduated from Byrd High School. He then went on to LA Tech where he received his degree in Commercial Art, later making Ruston his home of 40 plus years.

Lincoln split finalized

DOJ approves new Senate districts remap

It’s official. Lincoln Parish will be split up among three Senate districts.
The Senate has received federal clearance from the Department of Justice for the redesign of its 39 districts for use in the fall election.
Sen. Bob Kostelka, R-Monroe, got the call from Senate President Joel Chaisson on Tuesday evening.

Catching some reading waves

More than 100 students from Lincoln Parish were invited to “Catch the Reading Wave” this summer.
Jan Murphy, elementary supervisor, said 110 students were invited to the fourth year of the reading enrichment program offered each summer at Cypress Springs Elementary.

Fireworks safety a must for holiday weekend

Some parish residents wishing to have a blast this holiday weekend will be allowed to do so, but they’re also reminded that caution is urged.
While a statewide burn ban remains in effect, the Lincoln Parish Fire Department will allow for the Fourth of July long weekend the discharge of fireworks on a temporary basis in those areas where fireworks are not restricted.

Doctor speaks to Lions Club

Dr. Jared Vincent, local ophthalmologist, recently spoke at the noon meeting of the Ruston Lions Club. The Lions were told of the success of local free screenings for glaucoma, which were done by Dr. Vincent. Additionally the Lions learned that there are no symptoms which would alert anyone that they may have glaucoma — the only detection is professional screening.
