Schools Out Early Wednesday

Lincoln Parish Superintendent of Schools Danny Bell said after talking with the National Weather Service and Office of Homeland Security, a decision was made to close schools at noon Wednesday. Bell said they decided schools could be open for half of the day because conditions are not expected to worsen until afternoon.
Bell said noon will be equivalent to 3 p.m. tomorrow, meaning if a school normally lets out at 2:45 it will release at 11:45.

St. Jude, Ruston fight cancer

Cancer is one disease that scares us all. It can strike suddenly and silently. Most people have heard of someone who died because they didn’t have any symptoms until it was far too late to save them.
As adults, that terrifies us. The only thing more terrifying is the fact that our own children or any of the smiling young faces we see on a regular basis are just as susceptible to the disease as we are. The tragedy of a young life ended before they ever had a chance is one not lost on any of us.

Frances L. “George” Dumas

Frances L. “George” Dumas, age 93, of Ruston, Louisiana peacefully passed away on February 6, 2011 after a brief illness. Visitation will be from 1:00 – 2:00 p.m. with the Funeral to follow at Mineral Springs Baptist Church in Ruston, under the direction of Griffin Funeral Home of West Monroe on February 8, 2011, with pastor Stewart Toms officiating. Frances was born on September 8, 1917 in Mineral Springs, Louisiana. She was a loving wife, mother and grandmother. She also worked as a waitress and caregiver.

Look for spring, catch up on fall

They talk about February and groundhogs. Well we don’t have any groundhogs at Quigley Spur in the woods of Union Parish. Hogs here are stray hogs or wild hogs. What we look for are sapsuckers on your trees making rings of circles. The first fresh circle means spring is here. If you want to protect your trees spray the trunk with Orthene, it will kill the bugs they feed on. The first dead skunk you see on the road is an indication of spring.
