Visited by an angel — makes great Christmas story

I have a need to make this special.
When again will I ever have an opportunity to write a column appearing on Christmas Day?
Let me begin by wishing you and yours a Merry Christmas — a blessed Christmas, to be more specific. I’ve had an amazing time leading up to this day, and I’d like to thank God, who gave us our first Christmas.
People my age are notoriously famous for repeating themselves, and I realize I fit squarely in the middle of that category — and ... I’m about to do it again.

Tech gave solid effort against TCU

Into the record books for future reference will be the final score of 31-24.
But those numbers don’t tell the real story of Louisiana Tech versus TCU in the 2011 edition of the San Diego County Poinsettia Bowl.
Sure, the Horned Frogs left southern California as the winner and garnered a seventh bowl victory for this decade.
But the Bulldogs came away with arguably more swagger and recognition than their regional neighbor.

Prep stars returning

Austin Ginn and Justin Williams are gone and ditto for Cyril Noland and Kentrell Brice.
But there’s no shortage of highly-regarded players returning to Lincoln Parish’s prep circles in 2012.
Ginn, a running back, and linebacker Williams were among the key performers in Cedar Creek High’s nine-victory total, Top 10 Louisiana Sports Writers Association Class 1A poll and berth in the Louisiana High School Athletic Association playoffs.

Patton honored in state

Louisiana Tech University’s big play receiver has a big honor.
Quinton Patton, a junior wideout who averaged nearly 95 receiving yards per game for the Western Athletic Conference champs this season, was announced today as the Newcomer of the Year on the 2011 All-Louisiana collegiate squad chosen by members of the Louisiana Sports Writers Association.
The LaVernge, Tenn., product played a major role in the Bulldogs having one of their best seasons ever with an 8-4 regular season mark, outright league title and berth in the San Diego County Credit Union Poinsettia Bowl.

Bearcats on All-State squad

Five players earn honorable mention 5A slots

Two key receivers have been honored at the state’s highest level for their contributions in Ruston High’s eight-victory 2011 football season.
Wideout David Hernandez (6-1, 175) and tight end John David Moore (6-3, 195), who had a combined 65 catches totaling nearly 800 yards, are honorable mention members of the Class 5A All-State squad selected by members of the Louisiana Sports Writers Association.
Hernandez, a senior, led RHS in receiving with 28 catches for 455 yards and three touchdowns and third-year member Moore ended with 19 catches for 317 yards and four scores.

The blessed Christmas Day is here

Christmas is here but it is sometimes difficult to get a clear vision of what it’s really all about when filtered through clouds of war, political upheaval, famine and disease in every corner of the world.
Yet, the time for celebrating the birth of Christ is here, and we’re often faced with how to best honor Him in the midst of all that is going on around us.

Tech prospect Perry ranked top 50 in nation

Louisiana Tech signee and current Benton High School standout Lulu Perry has been ranked as one of the top 50 point guards in the country by Dan Olson’s Collegiate Girls Basketball Report.
Perry, who signed a national letter of intent in November to play for Teresa Weatherspoon and the Lady Techsters, is ranked as the 260th best high school player in the country by the scouting services as well.

Tech radio basketball coverage set for season

LA Tech Sports Properties General Manager Mason Ellenberger announced the radio affiliates that will be a part of basketball coverage on the LA Tech Sports Network for the upcoming season.
Once again every home and away men’s and women’s basketball game will be broadcast live on the LA Tech Sports Network this year, including all postseason contests in the Western Athletic Conference Tournament and any national postseason tournaments.

Gundy takes coach of the year

Oklahoma St. coach wins Eddie Robinson award

DALLAS — Oklahoma State coach Mike Gundy has been named the winner of the 2011 Eddie Robinson Coach of the Year Award. The award, presented by the Fiesta Bowl, is selected by the members of the 1,200-member strong Football Writers Association of America.

Lawson Lewis Swearingen, Sr.

Lawson Lewis Swearingen, Sr. passed away Thursday, December 22, 2011, at the age of 92 at Christus Grace Home after a brief illness. Visitation will be held at Broadmoor Baptist Church at 4110 Youree Dr, Shreveport, LA 71105, from 9:30 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday December 27, 2011. The funeral service will be held at Broadmoor at 11:00 a.m., following visitation. Officiating will be Dr. Chuck Pourciau, Dr. Scott Tatum, and Dr. Larry Williams. Interment will follow in Centuries Memorial Park on Mansfield Road.
