Scouts put out flags

The VFW Parnell-Burt Post 3615 wishes to thank the Boys Scouts of America from United Grace Methodist Church for putting out flags at the cemeteries on the holidays. Troop 59 has put out the flags for the VFW Post as long as J.D. Harper has served as commander. Harper said he would like to thank Roger Moore with the Boy Scouts for his leadership, as well as the parents of the young men. Pictured on the front row, from left to right, are Barret Moore, Cole Liston, McKinley Moore, Peter Howard and James Ellenberger. On the back row is Harper.

Local to graduate with honors from Northwestern Oklahoma University

in

Fall commencement at Northwestern Oklahoma State University will be held at 4:30 p.m. Sundayin Percefull Fieldhouse
Local honor graduates include:
• Orren Tims, of Ruston, Bachelor of Science in health and sports science education
Mark Sisco, a 1985 math education graduate, will deliver the commencement address. Sisco also was a 1990 outstanding graduate.

Celebrating survivors with pillow cases

Students in Darlene Johnson’s clothing and textiles class constructed personalized breast cancer awareness pillowcases for breast cancer survivors. Each pillowcase was constructed by a student and monogrammed with a breast cancer survivor’s name. Students were proud to construct and present a monogrammed pillowcase to the following persons also pictured with Johnson and the students: RHS Principal Mike Milstead received a pillowcase for his mother, Joyce Milstead, a 17-year survivor; Loretta Ford, employed at RHS, is a six-year survivor; Mary Null, director of personnel at the Lincoln Parish School Board, received a pillowcase for her mother Carolyn Risinger, a 22-year survivor; Glenview Elementary School Principal Lisa Mangum is a three-year survivor and Rixie Thompson, retired from Grambling State University’s School of Nursing, is a survivor of 27 years. 
Thompson is a two-time survivor.

Tech players prepared for Boise State or TCU

Boise State, TCU?
For Louisiana Tech University’s football team, it doesn’t matter who lines up on the other side at Qualcomm Stadium in San Diego, Calif., in late December.
Whoever they play in the San Diego County Credit Union Poinsettia Bowl, the Bulldogs plan to be prepared.
Boise State or TCU are the likely foes and will be representing the Mountain West Conference against the Western Athletic Conference champion ‘Dogs.

Boise State, TCU close out play Saturday

Louisiana Tech University is in.
Now, the wait is on to find out who the Bulldogs will be playing in the 2011 San Diego County Credit Union Poinsettia Bowl on Dec. 21.
It is due to be either former fellow Western Athletic Conference rival Boise State or TCU, last year’s Rose Bowl champion.
One of those two teams is set to be representing the Mountain West Conference against the WAC title-carrying Bulldogs.

Whitworth earns NFL honor

Andrew Whitworth could be on the verge of his first-ever trip to the Pro Bowl.
The former West Monroe High and LSU star is having one of the top seasons of any offensive lineman in the National Football League.
Whitworth, who is married to Ruston native and former Miss Louisiana Melissa Clark, has been chosen to the All-NFL Midseason team by Pro Football Weekly.

Bulldogs edged in overtime

HAMMOND — A 3-pointer from sophomore guard Cordarius Johnson hit off the front rim, as the Louisiana Tech men’s basketball team fell 72-69 in overtime to intrastate rival Southeastern Louisiana (4-2) at the University Center on Wednesday night.
Tech junior forward J.L. Lewisrecorded his first career double-double with 20 points and 11 rebounds, both career-highs.
“Southeastern Louisiana is a tough team to play at home and this would have been a great win for us,” said head coach Michael White. “We challenged our guys in the locker room to step up to the challenge and while they didn’t in the first half, they fought to the death for the last 20 minutes.”
