Rotary club looks for ‘Best’

in
Nominees sought for award

Lincoln Parish residents can soon weigh in on who they believe is the “best” humanitarian in town.
The Ruston Rotary Club is currently seeking nominations for the 2011 Bill Best Humanitarian Award.
The Humanitarian Award was first established by the Ruston-Lincoln Chamber of Commerce staff in 1997 to recognize a local resident for their outstanding contributions to humanitarian interests, unselfish giving and service to others.

Home catches ablaze

A structure fire that erupted in a mobile home park this morning might have been caused by a space heater.
About 15 personnel from Ruston Fire and Lincoln Parish Fire departments responded to a blaze at Shady Lane Mobile Home Park on McAllister Street.
RFD District Chief Tommie Woods, who was on the scene, said the call came in about 8:05 a.m.

Local students make Spanish connections

The Spanish students at A.E. Phillips were busy making new friends before the school let out for the holiday season.
As part of their Spanish curriculum, Lindsay Heard, the school’s Spanish teacher, paired children in third and eighth grades with ePals in Spain.
“This is the first time we’ve done this,” Heard said. “Especially the ePals program.”

Ag Expo tickets on sale

Advance tickets to Ag Expo 2012 will save adults $2 each. General admission at the door for Ag Expo will be $7 for adults; in advance the cost is $5. Children under 12 are admitted free.
Ag Expo will be held Jan. 20 and 21 at the Ike Hamilton Expo Center in West Monroe. Friday hours are 2 p.m. to 8 p.m.; Saturday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Celebrate New Year’s safely

New Year’s is a time for celebration and new beginnings; however, many residents each year choose to make unfavorable decisions.
This holiday, more than any other national holiday, involves alcohol consumption during its festivities.
The Louisiana Highway Safety Commission is urging all celebrants to designate a nondrinking driver before celebration festivities begin on New Year’s Eve and Day.

Christmas gift returns are here

Now that Christmas is over and the gifts unwrapped, some people are happily making use of their new possessions while others are trying to figure out how to get rid of them.
This year I purchased four small items for my husband — as opposed to one large gift — thinking it would increase the odds that he would like at least one of them. My efforts appear to have been successful as his nose has been buried in the new home repair guide since he first pulled apart the gift wrap and discovered it on Christmas Day.

Seasons, reasons and resolutions

The time has come for the end; when the proverbial “pen hits the paper.” I’m not referring to taxes, but year-end resolutions. We all make them, and we’ve all broken them, but this year is different. This year is the year for positive changes. These changes will set the course for how, not just this, but the years to come for life expectations will propel life into motion.
