Library to celebrate National Popcorn Poppin’ Month

The Lincoln Parish library is hosting “Popcorn Cooking Ideas” at 6 p.m. Oct. 13 in the Lincoln Community Room of the library. Participants will have the opportunity to observe and learn various recipes for flavored popcorn, colored popcorn and other simple ways to include popcorn in snack and dessert recipes.
October is National Popcorn Poppin’ Month, a time to celebrate one of America’s oldest and most beloved snack foods.

Head Start helps foster success

Children are the future of our community, and right here in Lincoln Parish there is an organization dedicated to making sure those children succeed.
October is National Head Start Awareness Month, and Lincoln Head Start kicked off the month with an open house sponsored by Lincoln Total Community Action.
Parents and public officials attended the event, where students of the school sang songs about Head Start and were able to show parents what they had been working on since the school year began.

Parks provide places to walk

Walking has been a big part of my life for a long time.
As a child, I used to walk barefoot up and down the sidewalks in my neighborhood. When I went to college, it became a means to stay in shape. Simply by picking up the pace and pumping my arms while walking around the activity center, I dropped about eight pounds.

Doctor waiting room economics

Do you ever wonder why we get in such a hurry to get to the doctor’s office? Is it because we want to be first in line? Is it because we have an appointment time? I’ve discussed this with others I’ve sat next to in waiting rooms listening as the people discuss their appointment times. Sometimes they wait for 30 minutes to be called to the second waiting room. It could be an hour before they see the doctor.

For Lilncoln Parish’s three high school football teams, the intensity meter goes into high gear on Friday night.
That’s when district competition kicks off for Ruston, Grambling and Cedar Creek.
And as an added bonus for their fans, its also the renewal of area rivalries.

CHOUDRANT — Following the final round of the 2011 Squire Creek Invitational this week, Louisiana Tech University head coach Jeff Parks didn’t have the look of a coach who had just watched his team beat 11 of the 12 teams it faced during two days of competition.
Instead, Parks looked disappointed.
The third-year head coach’s mindset shows the positive steps that the Bulldog golf program has taken over the past decade.

Tech ‘Welcome Back’ supper set for Argent Pavilion tonight

The annual Louisiana Tech University Lady Techster basketball “Welcome Back” supper is scheduled for tonight at 6 p.m. at the Argent Pavilion located adjacent to the Thomas Assemlby Center.
The event is free to all Tech fans, but those attending are asked to bring a covered dish (Vegetable, salad, bread or dessert). Meat and drinks will be provided.
Lady Techsters’ head coach Teresa Weatherspoon will be on hand with her coaching staff and will introduce the 2011-012 Lady Techst

Sealed bids for the following project will be received by the Purchasing Department of the City of Ruston, Louisiana, located at Ruston Public Works Complex, 701 East Tennessee Avenue, Ruston, Louisiana 71270, either by mail or hand delivery, no later than 10:00 A.M. local time on November 1, 2011, at which time all bids received will be publicly opened and read aloud in the office of the Purchasing Agent. Carmon Elizabeth Gerlach Rodgers

Carmon Elizabeth Gerlach Rodgers, 90, passed on to join her Lord and Savior, October 3, 2011. A memorial service will be held at 10:00 Saturday, October 8, 2011 in the Chapel of First Baptist Church in Ruston, LA with Pastor Andy Johnson officiating.

Carmon Rodgers was preceded in death by her husband William “Bill” W. Rodgers, parents Rudie and Minnie T. Gerlach, sister Kathryn G. Roberts, and son William Whit Rodgers.
