Downtown treats

In the quest to make sure area children have a fun and safe Halloween, the City of Ruston is offering an afternoon of holiday-themed activities including trick-or-treating in many of the city’s downtown businesses.
Starting at 4 p.m. Oct. 31, area children will be able to participate in the second annual Downtown Howl’oween by meeting at Railroad Park. Along with trick-or-treating, there will be a costume contest for dogs and many activity booths sponsored by area groups.

Graduation rates rise

Lincoln Parish schools rank No. 6 in state

According to information released last week by the Louisiana Department of Education, Lincoln Parish had a 15.8 percent increase in graduation rates for the 2010-11 school year.
The study measured the cohort graduation rate, which means it looked at the number of students who began ninth grade and finished 12th grade together.
In Lincoln Parish, the cohort graduation rate for 2010-11 was 84.2 percent, ranking the parish sixth in the state.

Lincoln Parish Library goes digital

Residents of Lincoln Parish now have eBooks, audiobooks, music and movies available for free instantly courtesy of the Lincoln Parish Library.
As part of the Green Gold Consortium, a partnership between 11 parishes including Lincoln, library patrons can now access OverDrive, a program which allows patrons to download various media onto their computers or digital devices for a limited time.
A digital bookmobile was parked in the library parking lot to introduce people to the new service and help residents learn how to utilize it.

Don’t be afraid to speak against family violence

Music from Ruston radio station KRLQ FM 94.1 is heard from Alexandria to Little Rock, Ark. Many more people listen on the Internet from places as far away as China, Australia and Germany, as well as coast to coast. Country music has clearly gone global.
The man who owns KRLQ is radio personality Bill Brown. One of the world’s good guys, Brown is not afraid to speak out about issues which concern him. Family violence in Louisiana is one of those issues.
