Parish facilities evaluated

A small crowd gathered inside a room on the third floor of the Lincoln Parish Courthouse on Tuesday evening to provide input and learn more about potential plans for the parish’s facilities.
The buildings housing parish government include the Police Jury Complex, the Lincoln Parish Courthouse, Courthouse Annex I and II, the old County Market building and the old federal building, which is co-owned by the city of Ruston. Parish Administrator Courtney Hall said parish employees are currently divided among the six buildings, of which the parish is paying utilities, insurance and upkeep.

Early Voting numbers high

in

Early Voting numbers appear strong for Saturday’s primary election.
Lincoln Parish Registrar of Voters Dianna Stone said 1,571 people — a good mixture of men and women —showed up at the courthouse to cast their votes during the Early Voting period, which ran Oct. 8-15.
“It was more than in the governor’s race four years ago,” Stone said. “A lot of Grambling people came before (Grambling State University homecoming on Saturday). But they came from areas all over the parish.”

A group of residents from Treemont Subdivision are hoping the Lincoln Parish Police Jury will “light up” their neighborhood.
During the regular meeting of the jury this month, members of the Public Works Committee received a request to assist with lighting needs in the 12-year-old subdivision, which was reportedly built without light poles.
“We have been trying for about 10 years to get lights out there,” said Barbara Tubre, one of several subdivision residents who attended the meeting. “Neighborhood watch suggested we get lights. We just think it’s a safety issue.”

Be aware during ADHD Week

It seems like every time someone sees a hyper child these days, at least one person attempts to diagnose the child with Attention Deficit Hyperactive Disorder. Most people have heard of the disorder, but most people just think it causes children to have trouble paying attention and sitting still in class.
While that’s certainly a small part of ADHD, it isn’t the whole picture.

Don't be afraid to speak up

LAURA SLOAN.jpg

There’s such a thing as being too forward. Just ask the many men and women out there who have shunned suitors or potential dates because they seemed too eager or pushy. Sometimes love needs space in order to be realized.
This same concept can also be applied to many other areas of life, including the purchase of material goods, which make life more comfortable or convenient. In the last few years, perhaps as a result of the poor economy and enhanced technology, I have noticed a tendency for people working in retail to try to oversell their services.

Dependency on phones worsens

BROOKS, BRENDA.jpg

It never seems to end, you know?
Phones! Just this morning, the first thing that jumped on the Yahoo page browser was a new announcement about phones. Just yesterday there was a write-up about the Apple Phone 5, no 4SI. Who really knows what it is called? All I know is it is called dependency. Before long there will be rehabilitation centers for phone dependency.

Kindergarten
Hico Kindergarten has really been excited about school. They are learning so much in reading and math.
In reading, we have learned new words and have learned how to blend to make words with the letters we have learned. The students are participating in fun cooking activities related to our letter of the week. For our first cooking activity, we made pancakes for the letter P. The students enjoyed this activity. We are looking forward to more of these activities.
