Gundy takes coach of the year

DALLAS — Oklahoma State coach Mike Gundy has been named the winner of the 2011 Eddie Robinson Coach of the Year Award. The award, presented by the Fiesta Bowl, is selected by the members of the 1,200-member strong Football Writers Association of America.

Lawson Lewis Swearingen, Sr.

Lawson Lewis Swearingen, Sr. passed away Thursday, December 22, 2011, at the age of 92 at Christus Grace Home after a brief illness. Visitation will be held at Broadmoor Baptist Church at 4110 Youree Dr, Shreveport, LA 71105, from 9:30 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday December 27, 2011. The funeral service will be held at Broadmoor at 11:00 a.m., following visitation. Officiating will be Dr. Chuck Pourciau, Dr. Scott Tatum, and Dr. Larry Williams. Interment will follow in Centuries Memorial Park on Mansfield Road.

Funeral Services celebrating the life of John W. “Papa John” Lowrey will be held at 11:00 AM Tuesday, December 27th, 2011 at Owens Funeral Home. Offciating the service will be Rev. Reginal Colvin and Rev. Jeff Stroud. Interment will follow in Choudrant Memorial Cemetery in Choudrant Louisiana under the direction of Owens Memorial Chapel Funeral Home of Ruston.

Tech awarded for ‘KAB Man’

The Louisiana Tech University Department of Theatre received top honors for their efforts to remind people to Keep Lincoln Parish Beautiful.
At a ceremony earlier this month, Cathi Cox-Boniol, Lincoln ACHIEVE coordinator, presented two awards to Tech in honor of the creative collaboration between the theatre department and the KLPB commission. The awards were presented originally at a ceremony in New Orleans during a Keep America Beautiful convention, which Cox-Boniol said was kicked off with a video of the Tech performance.

Holiday grief support available

While the holiday season brings tidings of joy and happiness to many across the nation, it can also bring a severe case of the “holiday blues” to many thanks to the extra amount of stress and tension associated with Christmas time.
Shopping for gifts, dealing with difficult schedules and trying to balance the budget are all added stress factors that the holidays can bring, and those things are not always easy to forget about.

International students make plans for holidays

While most students at Louisiana Tech University are able to travel home for the holidays, many international students do not have the option.
With international students coming from countries all over the world like Pakistan, India and El Salvador, Christmas is not celebrated in many of those countries the way it is here.
The two-week Christmas holiday break is instead a way for many international students to travel around the U.S. or see family in surrounding cities.
